It's really amazing to think that we are seriously looking at about 27/28 cars at Knockhill. That must be a record.

I'm sure BTCC.net did some analysis on grid numbers some time back. Would be interesting to see how 2013 numbers compare to past history.

That was me. I really need to get out more. :p :(

Here are Knockhill's entry numbers over the years:
1992: 19 (joint season low)
1993: 22 (season low)
1994: 23 (season low)
1995: 23
1996: 21
1997: 21
1998: 19 (joint season low)
1999: 16
2000: 14 (season low)
2001: 26
2002: 30
2004: 18 (season low)
2005: 17 (joint season high!)
2006: 18
2007: 18 (season low, mainly because of the pile-up at Brands)
2008: 22 (joint season low)
2009: 17 (season low)
2010: 18 (season low)
2011: 24

One Direction hair has no place in motorsport.

Isn't that the same or similar style to what Tom Chilton moved to after he left the "Sonic the Hedgehog" look?

ITT we discuss hairstyles in BTCC.

Couldn't really give a shit about his hair or anything atm, the only thing that matters is his on track performance.

And tbh, as long as he doesn't get in the way too much or cause any stupid wrecks, that'll be good enough.
He's a kid promoted to the big leagues perhaps before his time.
Let's not get all Joey Logano syndrome and hate him for no reason out of either jealousy or that's just the default mode for most on here :p

We dislike drivers such as Logano and Chilton not because of any kind of syndrome or jealousy but instead because of their tendancies to be momumental dickheads.

I remember that - 30 car grid then the next season that collosal prick Richard West was put in charge of TOCA and dropped Knockhill because it was more than 40 miles from central London.

Ugh just listening to Radio Le Mans and Hindy extolling the virtues of GT racing and how two 1 hour GT races would be a better TV spectacle than what we have now...

They even had the gaul to suggest the quality of the grid (driver wise) was better in 2006 when we only had 8 cars....

Sweet Jaysus.... :8:

I hate it when people get on their high horse about the BTCC.
Yeah, it's not glamorous exotic machinery nor is it pushing the boundaries of the sport in either the technical regulations or the laptimes...
But hell, it's fun and the racing is great. Is that REALLY such a bad thing?

Focusing on the crashes is also doing it a disservice. When there's a higher ratio of close wheel to wheel racing, yes there's a higher risk of accidents.
DTM has less accidents because they're all about 5 seconds apart from each other..on a good day.

In other news: due to all the nostalgia in this thread I went back and watched the 1999 season review.
I was right, the series had better editing than it did racing.
In the first few races it was all technical retirements (Matt Neal wouldn't have won his race if it wasn't for a bonnet pin on a vauxhall, a engine failure on a Renault and a puncture on a Volvo! He was the fastest car on the day but he was massively lucky that stalling in the pits didn't ruin it for him! )

I thought it funny how Plato was the Jenson Button of the year too, any time there was any kind of disagreement on track, there was his team radio moaning how "Aiello would've been in the gravel if my car wasn't there" etc etc...
Hilariously Aiello didn't stand for any of Plato's crap either.
When Plato was pulling his Knockhill blocking tactics and trying to hold him up, Laurant just shovelled him off the road in the most blatant way possible!
Hilarious. OK he got disqualified for it, but if a few people stood up to Jason in the same way now he'd learn eventually!

One other massive drawback on the manufacturer laden Super Touring era was Nissan's team orders.
Poor David Leslie was made to look a fool. After they told Aiello not to pass him at Donington, no one thought to tell David and he stood in front of all the media saying "there's no team orders at Nissan...I was the fastest driver, etc", even though there blatantly were and it was clear Aiello was the faster driver.
Why they couldn't have a quick word with him and tell him the truth before he got in front of the cameras I'll never know, awful management from Nissan...

One last thing, I thought the Yaytree was a big deal in the "comical track decoration" front, but I don't know who thought
it'd be a great idea to have a giant Michelin man giving a Nazi salute at the start/finish line of the Summer Brands Hatch round :p
(Obviously it wasn't supposed to and one arm got free while the other was tied down but it's pretty hilarious to look at. I can't find a pic of it though,...sadly.)

Nice photos, and I'm loving the Jeff Allam livery from 1994.

Some honesty from Thorney plus a pretty cool concept that went undeveloped

While they are not represented by team or name on the current BTCC grid, two of their cars are there. That's still an achievement in itself.

Such a shame it came to this, really thought they were going do big things when they came into the scene.

I won't be satisfied until I get a Volvo back.

Jeez. Even 10+ years later, Patrick Watts is still getting involved in scrapes with BTCC machinery. Some things never change lol.

I think you're referring to the possibility of some Renault Meganes appearing, right?

I suppose when you drive so many bad cars, you push it too hard and crash  .
