I would be pissed too if I had to sit in traffic for 6 fucking hours.

Not even the eventual I-405 closures would be THIS bad. At least we Southern Californians have an idea since we're warned well ahead of time (not like I plan to visit LA next week).

Thats awesome man Ernie was one of my fav when i was a kid. I still say Ernie Irvan would have beaten the 3 team in 94 for the cup if it wasn't for his crash @ michigan.

Matt Merrell passed Tim George Jr with 6 to go to win his first ARCA race at Berlin. Enfinger, Sheltra, and Hackenbracht rounded out the top 5.

Obviously a lot of you guys didn't go to Cup races 15-20+ years ago.. 4 or 5 hours of traffic wasn't uncommon. I remember going to London in 1994, you were on a tiny ass road leading to the track, parked in dirt lots that just had the trees cleared, then had to walk on dirt paths through the woods with little signs saying "you are 1.2 miles from the track"..."you are 5000ft from the track". Not to mention the 4 hours of waiting just to get out of the parking lot after... Dover, Pocono, all terrible traffic. The highway behind the frontstretch at Dover never used to be there.

Yeah it sucks but its a night race, plan accordingly.

You only get one chance to make a first impression. I know that's how it used to be (and worse) years ago, but it's unacceptable unless you're using some sort of time machine to bring those fans from 15-20 years ago who wouldn't know any different.

The highway sign facing away on the left in the second photo is about where I parked to attend the Truck Race in 2000. The Cup race traffic does look a helluva lot worse, though.

I'd imagine the locals and travelers going elsewhere on I-71/I-75 that weekend are pretty pissed as well, and in some cases probably more so than the race fans.

SMI's making up to the fans that got screwed by the shitty parking facilities and being stuck in traffic for a quarter of a day: just present your ticket to any SMI track this season or Kentucky 2012 and you're in.

Indy will also honor the Kensucky race tickets either for free (practice) or for $5 (qualifying).

Oh man, I've heard horror stories about Dover traffic, and I've gotten to experience '96 and '97 traffic at Pocono and Loudon (respectively)... so brutal. Painful. Still, every year, there have been improvements, and now, we're in the lot at 8am, and barely even an hour leaving the track. (Watch me jinx the traffic for this year's race next month...)

So there is hope for Kentucky yet in terms of parking... the racing itself? Dunno.

Yeah Dover traffic seemed horrible. We just camped at the circuit and walked back after.

We always did bus trips to New Hampshire, and it was terrible, 13 miles to the highway from the track, traffic all the way, even a few miles onto the highway.

Last time I went to Dover (Sept 05), I made sure to book a hotel near the track. Fuck that traffic then the 4 hour trip back to CT.

last time I went to a big event, it took 8 hours to drive 3 miles out the place (this was the 1990's), the next year I got the train and walked the mile to/from the track, as someone said, if you know the infrastructure is crap, you plan accordingly.

Some guys on their KYS's FB page are unreal, leaving home a couple hours before the race and expecting to get there in time, offering the free entry to other events is very good, you wouldn't get that over here, the attitude would be should have taken our advice and left earlier, some people are never happy.

Too bad Kentucky Speedway is in the absolute middle of nowhere and there is no way to get to the track other than driving there. Off-site parking with buses shuttling people to and from the track would be a great option, but of course then the question becomes where the hell are you going to have off-site parking? There's literally nothing near the racetrack. It's in the middle of farmland and trees and that's it.

Shuttle buses from cities like Louisville, Cincinnati and the like might work, or cities with stadiums/areas that could allow of thousands of cars to be parked and which are only 30-45 minutes away.

I'm surprised more short tracks don't try that same idea.

It's probably a money issue for short tracks. I doubt renting out areas like that, and then offering shuttle services would really come cheap. Maybe not for Bruton, since money is apparently no object for him, but in the end, it's probably all about the bottom line.

sounds like they need to beef up the main road to the track tbh.

Except the other 360 days of the year, it'd be a waste.
