NASCAR has, shockingly, made the sensible decision and ditched the barn door spoilers and 550hp package! 670hp and 4 inch spoiler at all tracks except Daytona, Talladega, and possibly Atlanta.

I’m sincerely shocked. I was surprised they even tried that combo last week, and I figured there was no chance they’d actually go with it.

To be fair, 670 is still well short of what an appropriate power level would be for the Cup series, but after three years of 550 with Goliath spoilers, this is a very welcome change of pace. I’m actually a bit excited for a new season for the first time in mane years.

Is that the package they were running where a few drivers actually lost it on their own?

At least that's.....something

Unless that was due to the temperature in December not letting them get heat in the tiles, I dunno?

They were spinning out with every package on Friday. But this is the one that is the most challenging (theoretically). Smallest spoiler, biggest horsepower number they’ve put forward with the new car.

They actually had drivers losing it on their own with most if not all of the packages they tried (I am guessing mostly because they're not used to the lack of sideforce and the larger wheels, so it's hard for them to know where the edge is yet). But this is the highest hp and lowest downforce of all the packages they tested last week.

(Looks like Chris and I were typing the same thing at the same time  )

This is good news. Looking forward to see the cars not being actually planted to the racetrack all stint long.

I'll give it a chance again, this is a move in the right direction and I have to respect that.

It'll take a while for teams to figure out how to tune the new cars to run closer together, so I don't expect this to instantly produce great racing, but it's certainly a step in the right direction.

Cup cars are probably going to use the SS package (which is 510 HP and either a 6 or 7 inch spoiler).

I haven't read anything about what the Xfinity or Truck series are gonna do though.

The NASCAR YouTube channel has a placeholder for the first day of testing at Daytona tomorrow.

They did a group drafting test a little while ago. They were actually getting pretty aggressive to test out bump drafting, brief tandems, etc. The runs are big and it was fun to watch, and it seemed like they were able to catch back up pretty quickly if they got out of the throttle for a moment. However, they are slow. Multiple people on Reddit said they timed drafting laps in the 48.5 second range, which is only around a 185mph average. But, "Nascar will not try the 6-inch spoiler because it is happy with the speeds with the 7-inch spoiler."

NASCAR's insurance must only pay out if the cars run under 180MPH or something stupid like that, they've been obsessed with slowing them down on plate tracks for years... :?
