Remember, kids, it's not where you start, it's where you finish.

Thank God for hockey. Lord knows how the NASCAR media will milk every drop out of this.

Not watching Speed until they drop the flag on the first Duel race on Thursday.... staying off Twitter might help too.

Oh well, she won the pole. She can be this decade's "Loy Allen"... fast, but never hung around up front.

Her qualifying lap has been the most over-analyzed lap in NASCAR, ever.

It's a shame that the media coverage will completely ruin what is a legitimate achievement and is ultimately worth celebrating. I don't for a minute think she'll be in front at the flag, but putting the car on pole is an achievement, no doubt about it ...

Also, Nascar's headline features a grammatical error, this annoys me more than the rest of it ... :flag:

Winning pole at Daytona now it's been repaved is not an accomplishment.

All you need is a fast car, a strong engine, and the ability to hold the throttle all the way down. It's no coincidence that a lot of drivers from the same teams turned up in clumps. For example, Danica's team-mates are 4th and 5th.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

What a pack of whinging arseholes ITT. Love this forum but judging so far it may be best to stay out of this thread if I'm gonna be following speedweeks.

And I'm sorry, but "Winning pole at Daytona is not an accomplishment" is the stupidest fucking thing I've ever heard. What is your idea of a true accomplishment, o master of the keyboard?

It may not be much of an accomplishment but technically it is an accomplishment ... and ultimately she is still the one on pole, and that has to count for something ...

I'm not meaning to say it's a massive achievement, or worth making a big deal over, because other than indicating a fast car, pole is pretty meaningless at Daytona (especially compared to a Spa/Monaco pole, for example), especially in a long race where there's a good chance you won't make it to the end without some kind of drama, and I don't think she has the race craft to bring it home at or near the front at Daytona against a lot of seasoned and tough competitors. But she has done something and whilst it's quickly been blown up/was already before it even happened, I don't think it needs to be completely stripped away into nothing/a non-accomplishment either ...

You don't have to listen to me. Junior said that a trained monkey can qualify at Daytona or Talladega.

Danica's 4th place on the grid at Indy in 2005 was very impressive. If she can qualify in the top 15 at other tracks, that will be very impressive for someone of her experience. If she can finish in the top 10 next Sunday (very possible), that will be impressive. But the rules in place at Daytona and Talladega take a lot of the challenge of qualifying away and turn it into a contest of 'who has the best engine'.

Someone phone the dog driving school in New Zealand ... (I'm not going to, it'll be really expensive to call them from here.)

With things you don't/don't anticipate that you will enjoy watching, there is always the option to not watch it ... it's a Sunday, enjoy it, then enjoy the race afterwards.

I don't watch the Spanish F1 pre-race because it's Alonsomania. The race isn't any different but I want to watch the race, and I can tone it out/use it to improve my tyre-related vocabulary ...

Alright, the monkey thing is bullshit. I've been around Daytona in a driving experience car; the ride along at 175mph and myself driving around 155-160mph. It is way more difficult than you think, to go fast, and by no means is it like driving a car down the interstate. Of course you will have to take my word for it.

Congrats to the #10 TEAM and Danica who drove the car for them. ;)

I don't think many are listening to you on this, don't worry. Pole for the 500 is a huge line on most driver's and team's CVs, regardless of the online forum or Dale Jr cred it gets. Mike Skinner's headline achievement in bios is still that he won the pole in 97. It won't put Danica at the top of any all time greats lists, but it's huge for the sport, will reach media far beyond NASCAR's normal realm, and for the vast majority who aren't professional online motorsports critics, is a pretty big deal.

If your problem is the amount of irrelevant bullshit that clogs up Daytona 500 coverage this week, there's another option besides clogging up 80% of the thread with complaints about it - maybe try ignoring it, just tuning in for the actual racing, and discussing actual racing issues. For all the Stenica hate people here sure seem to like bringing it up every 2nd post.

It's all relative. Obviously getting pole at Daytona is more of an accomplishment than, say, taking a record size shit, but putting your right foot on the floor and hugging the yellow line takes far less skill than 99% of any other achievements in motorsport.

Yeah she's going to get a load of media attention and it'll look good on her CV, so if you think that's an accomplishment then fair enough. But let's be honest, the skill in RP races is in the actual racing, not getting the pole.
