What are the rules about team orders in NASCAR? It's probably fair to allow your team mate past if he needs the points. I think deliberately spinning is really poor sportsmanship though. What if other drivers then get involved in the accident and lose their chance at a Chase spot? I like Truex, but I wouldn't mind seeing him and Bowyer penalised.

Ah, but it wasn't about dropping a spot or two to get more points for their teammate. He was too far back points wise to leap Logano into the wildcard spot.

If NASCAR is consistent, Bowyer will get a fine, a minor points penalty and will be put on probation, which was the penalty afforded to Junior when he did the same thing in 2004.

Did NASCAR penalize Menard in 2011? He did (or tried to do) the same exact thing.

no but I think that was because he failed at doing it properly.

And what Bowyer did was different. It was the whole team in on it and then they continued to manipulate the championship standings.

If NASCAR have to analyze the Bowyer incident then they should go back and analyze every incident through 2013 where a team has instructed a driver to assist a team mate. After all, a Chase spot was up for grabs at every stage of the season until and including Richmond and if any action contributed to a driver being assisted in gaining a Chase spot then surely that should also be considered manipulation of the championship?

A teammate letting a driver past, say to lead a lap for example, usually used to happen all the time. That kind of stuff is fair game. MWR just gamed the entire system. There's no rule against parking your car, but they have penalized people in the past for drawing cautions intentionally.

They wanted it to be a playoff, it's almost like a football team resting it's starters to prepare for the post season. The only difference here is that it affected other teams making it too, and that was the intent. To assist a teammate and screw over ones who had actually accomplished what they needed. It's a dick move, but unless NASCAR throws the book at MWR, there's nothing to prevent it from happening all over again next year.

I don't think pitting for position is a big deal compared to causing intentional cautions. It's a difference between
"clean" team orders and "dirty" team orders. I'm not a big fan of team orders personally, but a distinction has to be made.

LOL, can't believe people are seriously saying a penalty would be an overreaction. Of course it's happened before undetected, but MWR set a new standard for lack of respect for the sport in blatantly orchestrating a result, and on the night it would have the most effect. When things are done with this little regard for the rule makers, of course they need to act. Going back and looking at every previous incident has nothing to do with it, and no professional series will catch everything like this, but what MWR did is different to any previous example you can list, and it should be punished harshly.

Whether or not it will is another matter.

IMHO, there needs to some penalty as Philthy said, this is on a whole different level to anything else done before and it made a mockery of what should have been a great story with Newman making the Chase. NASCAR won't like that it robbed the fans of seeing that. Not to mention the sponsors getting pissed off given how much weight they put on making the Chase. Even MWR's sponsors won't enjoy the bad publicity of making the Chase like this so it's a bad situation for them as well as Newman's sponsors.

I seriously don't know how they came up with a reasonable way to handle this so soon. Definitely expect this to be huge, though.

A sponsor could actually leave MWR, happened with Renault when the Singapore crash came to light and ING left.

ING were looking to leave anyway, Crashgate just gave them an excuse.

NAPA and Aaron's stayed with Mikey when he was caught putting sterno in the engines, I don't think they'd leave because of this.

I know it's Bowyer losing positions intentionally, but wasn't Truex ahead of him on the track anyway?

Bowyer slowed to a stop on pit road to give positions to Logano, which would secure the Chase for Truex with a Wild Card spot if Logano made it in on points.
