We're just lucky the engine and other tyre got lodged in the fence and went no further.

Now I'm not really into Nascar and safety, but when you see what safetymeasures have been done over the years:

Isn't that single catchfench incredibly outdated?

EDIT:

A bit disrespectful to bring something like this up between this bad news. Just wanted to say my thoughts are with all involved.

Good old sensitive and caring DailyMail have the accident as their main headline, and they've used a few photos which would carry warning tags should they be posted here - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/ushome/index.html

Damn, we were bitching before but hell, I hope the race is boring tomorrow.... :o

I wouldn't sit that close in the first place. It's a sad situation but never forget the warning on the back of your ticket. You are going to a motorsport event, anything can and will happen.

Nationwide has get the craziest package out there with a mix of pack and tandem racing. Tomorrow won't be as exciting as this, no real speed differences, no bump drafting or tandem racing. So I don't expect as much excitement, although you never know those last 30 laps.

It's printed on every ticket when anyone goes to watch a race, but according to some lawyers I've talked to and some incidents I've heard about in the world of Speedway, that line doesn't mean jack when it comes to lawsuits.

Looks like they're only prepared to make a statement on the readiness of the track for tomorrow and that an investigation will occur, nothing about the wellbeing of the victims. Not sure that's the best way to handle this.

Making a statement about the wellbeing of the spectators involved is not advisable due to potential future litigation against Nascar and Daytona.

Well, anyone can attempt to sue for anything. The main point of the law is to protect sensitive, identifying information. But I suppose in certain contexts there can be violations of the law even when identifying info isn't released.

It's amazing to see how different the fence was in 2000. 8O Looked like chicken wire and toothpicks then.
