What's you guys' opinions on Tim Richmond?

I think that guy was one hell of a wheelman and deserves to be in the HOF more than some others. Rick Hendrick's first real superstar, but just like the Pete Rose/MLB situation, he'll never get the recognition for his achievements.

Had the talent, if he hadn't had his health issues he would have certainly been a hall of famer. Had Richmond lived (along with Davey Allison), Dale wouldn't have 7 championships and Gordon probably wouldn't have 4. I don't think Tim got enough time to really show what he could do, and he won quite a bit even before his health issues took hold.

Here's a question for everybody: did anyone run a V6 in Cup during the 80s? I ask this because I was watching the short highlights of some of the early 80s Daytona 500s and some people in the comments suggested that this was the case. And some of the cars did sound a bit V6-ish to my ears, but I suppose that could be cars with V8s that sounded different to the other cars.

V6 were for division 2 only, I suggest it's more some engine/exhaust tweaks, like the Morgan McClure #4 Kodak car who did not sound like the others in the nineties.

Bit like was it Roush in 2000 whose engines sounded significantly different from others at places like Pocono. An early 00's related question, how good could Jerry Nadeau have been if not for his accident?

I'd bet anything it was a Junior Johnson tweak to improve power that a few teams tried to mimic in the early 80s.

Watching the 2001 Daytona 500. Crazy seeing all these names who are no longer in the sport. Also crazy that the youngest driver was 20 years old...Casey Atwood.

That 4 car had a crazy exhaust set up in the 90's. I ran into Sterling on a vacation in the Caribbean and he said it was crazy modded.

I wonder what exactly they did to the exhaust make the car whine the way it did - how the pipes were laid out and whatnot. Might have been similar to what some teams did in the late 70s/early 80s with the hornet sound.

Here is a few films of major races from the early days that hadn't surfaced on the internet until now (to my knowledge).

The '61 World 600, David Pearson's breakthrough race where he won on three wheels and had maybe his first big battle with Richard Petty. Also Reds Kagle loses a leg after the guardrail goes through the footwell of his car.



This only shows part of the race unfortunately. There is a big crash for Buddy Baker though.



Three cars crashed through/over the guardrail in this, and two of those incidents are shown. Plus there's a big fire, though that wasn't due to a very bad accident at all, and the fire truck has a Confederate flag on it (that wouldn't happen now!)

Fireball Roberts' fatal crash is not shown or even mentioned in the main part of this film.


I think we can all be seriously thankful that the idea of having someone sing songs about a race and then having them play during the highlights as they did in this video did not catch on.
