They are worried about the racing and making changes progressively, that's good enough for me.

Also, last year Atlanta and Texas were epic. Sometimes the race can be nice. And being hard to pass is nice for strats, but only one or two races like that. Less horsepower keeps cars closer. Look at NCWTS at Fontana. In the early 90's, Michigan races looked like SS. Less HP and more drag.

Doesn't mean much if they can't actually pass.

Front Row Joe (I believe that's a silent "J".......) in the 34 this weekend. Meh.

Not the worst pick...I guess.

With highs not reaching past mid 40's at best, and a 60% chance of Sunday rain.. this one reminds me of spring atlanta like it used to be. Maybe an ice cold track on top of the tire wear will make it a real slip sliding drivers race. One can hope anyway. I look forward to the result. I miss winter weather races.

Or give a little less wear, more grip and more racey conditions. Last year they were dropping 10 seconds in a fuel run.... More sliding? Oh boy, that would be fun to witness for sure.

lol, it wasn't 10 seconds. That's insane.

I was watching an old Darlington race, actually the Craven one. They ran 8 laps and pitted for 4 tyres. Atlanta is pretty much the only track that has that sort of wear now.

Tire wear, slippin' and slidin'... that's actually really awesome. You end up with guys driving too hard on fresh tires getting passed just a few laps later when they start wearing out. Drivers make mistakes and get passed. Pit stop strategy comes into play with when to stop for fresh rubber, and if you should take the chance of short pitting and hoping you don't get caught out by a yellow. That's Darlington and Rockingham as fuck.

Fuck aero, tire falloff is better.

Day racing at Darlington used to be insanely fun to watch because of the tire drop off. Cars skating around everywhere. God why can't they run the Southern 500 during the day!?

This.

With the cars having so much downforce, maybe bringing a tyre that offers less grip would be the perfect way to spice up the racing on the 1.5 milers.

They're probably going to break the track record this weekend…

192 avg already, only 15 minutes into testing.

I guess the temperatures help but I still think that's going to be out of reach with the lower HP.

I dunno.. could be pretty interesting come Friday night. The lower hp might hurt a bit at the end of the straights, but they sure will scream through the turns. Pick up a little draft and.. 200.

I would almost think they'd be a little quicker on the straights with less spoiler but suffer through the corners a bit for the same reason.

Carl Edwards said he feels like there's more on-throttle time now with the new rules package. Changes how he drives Atlanta, he said.

IMO that's the opposite of what would promote better racing.

Exactly what we all expected, unfortunately.

Yup, I was hoping the downforce loss would outweigh the power loss but these teams can pull downforce out of their ass before NASCAR knows what's up.

Day had nothing to do with it. It was all about the surface. The most recent repave used a totally different asphalt mixture from what had been used at Darlington the past 60+ years which used to have sea shells and shit like that ground into it. Now they have some fancy durable mix for all the repaves since then, like they use on highways.
