1996 was the year I first started following this sport, and John was sort of the Maldonado of NASCAR back then, occasionally fast but constantly crashing, except he was a ridiculously nice and softly-spoken guy, probably too nice for his own good. Seeing him pull out the win at Daytona in '97 was one of the most memorable finishes to a race for me, and when he moved to Petty I started rooting for him properly. I'm actually surprised looking at his stats he only won 2 races, because I remember him being pretty competitive in the 43 for a while. Bummer to hear he might be on his way out. 1996 suddenly seems very long ago...

John is a drivers driver. Has won in about everything he has driven from dragsters to indycars to stock cars. Very underrated IMO. Cancer is a bitch and I'm shocked and saddened to hear John is fighting it

It's had a few races on TV with MotoAmerica, Grand-Am, the precursor to what is now known as GRC and the ARCA race in 2008

yeah it's pretty flat from what I remember testing with on iRacing (they have it released as a unfinished track without the buildings)

Isn't that the track where they had to modify one of the straights because Daytona Prototypes were getting airborne and nearly blowing over?

No, there was a small rise a little beyond the exit of one corner that a lot of different classes of cars were getting very light at the crest. If I recall correctly, it wasn't even that much of an aero issue, because it was just so abrupt the way it leveled off.
