If we thought the repaved Michigan was fast...

I might actually tune into that qualifying session to witness it.

EDIT: Just realized it'll be AFTER the Cup race this year meaning they will have a year weather cycle on the track since Atlanta only has 1 Cup date these days. Should still be pretty fast.

Finally a repaved Atlanta, I was really curious how fast it would go with it for years. Shame that the old surface have to give way thou.... 2 very different tracks that could be on any cup calendar.

Amazing job by the speedway to keep the track for so long, the paving was very rough for several years already.

I just worry it will be like recent Charlotte, Darlington, Dega, Daytona repaves which are still smooth and flat like the day they were paved. They just dont wear out like they used to.

I understand because of drainage but wtf with the reconfiguring T1 & T2? And widening them from 60 to 80 feet? Imo the turns at TMS are way too wide to begin with.

Quote:
Texas to re-pave, reconfigure turns, improve drainage: Texas Motor Speedway will begin a major capital improvement project Monday consisting of a complete repave, construction of an extensive drainage system and a re-profiling of the 1.5-mile oval configuration at the world-renowned motorsports facility that annually plays host to NASCAR and INDYCAR events. The renovation will add a new layer of asphalt over the existing pavement, an expansive French drainage system on the frontstretch and backstretch, and reduce the banking in Turns 1 and 2 by four degrees. Barring extensive weather delays, the project is expected to be completed by early to mid-March in anticipation of the O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 NASCAR doubleheader scheduled for April 7-9. The repaving and drainage system come as a result of issues the facility was incurring in attempting to dry the racing surface, in particular this past year when both NASCAR race weekends and the INDYCAR race were affected by weather-related delays. While the aged track surface at Texas Motor Speedway is lauded by drivers, speedway officials made the decision to repave in the best interests of their fans that had to deal with the inconveniences of the delays. The repave will feature an asphalt mix similar to the surfaces at SMI sister tracks, Kentucky Speedway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The mix used in conjunction with the construction method will aid in the track's properties of an "aged" track. For the installation of the French drainage system, trenches will be cut in numerous locations on the frontstretch and backstretch to provide multiple points for water to drain away from the facility more quickly and efficiently than the current system. In addition to the repaving and drainage system, Texas Motor Speedway will undergo a re-profiling in Turns 1 and 2 to give the venue a more unique layout from its currently symmetrical 24-degree banking in all four turns. While Turns 3 and 4 will remain unchanged, the banking of Turns 1 and 2 will be decreased to 20 degrees with the racing surface width expanding from 60 to 80 feet in that section of the track. The reduced banking, which will decrease lap speeds and potentially open up additional passing opportunities in Turns 1 and 2, will provide Texas Motor Speedway with a new, distinctive layout for a 1.5-mile oval that will be more challenging to the drivers and add more action for the fans.

Texas is going to be too fast for IndyCar now. They need to really look at this carefully because it would shape up to be a Las Vegas 2011 situation (albeit a little less insane now that we have the wheel guards).

Well, if you're cutting the banking 4 degrees and you don't widen the surface then you're going to have a 10ft tall, negative angle outside wall. Like Kentucky increased the banking in 1-2 so they just widened the apron, no need to mess with the outside wall but it narrowed the racing surface. Unless they're going to make the apron more narrow at TMS now. Do that and you're going to have the same problem with the layout as they did circa 97-98.

They didn't have a choice but to repave, I mean, when you have to reschedule a race for MONTHS because of drainage issues...

I would guess that they are going for a Darlington vibe with two different ends of the track.

You can fix any Indycar problems by either taking off downforce (if it's a pack) or turning down the turbo (if they're too fast).

They changed both ends of the track at Kentucky too. Must be SMI's new "thing".

Not a surprise. Texas NEEDED a repave to fix those weepers...

I'm a fan of asymmetrical tracks where it's harder to get your car to handle right on both ends of the track at the same time. This could be interesting. And lowering the banking on one end will be a good thing for IndyCar.

There was nothing wrong with Las Vegas 2011. I wish they would have finished the race.
