Not to kill your (apex) boner about how awesome NASCAR is, but it's all amount getting that "echoey" engine noise from when they're on the backstretch at those bigger tracks... absolutely love that noise. I'm not sure if you got that from the box seats - maybe you did! Some folks tolerate the noise better than others, of course.

BTW "echoey" is the best term I could come up with. I'm sure people here know what I'm talking about. It's that distant roar, and it's amazing. :)

At Miami on the restarts it was really loud in the box seats which was the only point I'd say it got hard to hear. But the rest of it was fine, i was there for all the days during my visits so you get plenty of time to hear the cars by them self and in groups. Got a great video somewhere of Brad K doing a lap by himself at Dega, the sound was just amazing as it was on the Monday after the race so no other noises whatsoever.

I sat in the backstretch box at Daytona for the 2004 400 and it was the most awful/boring experience I've ever had watching a race.

I think I know what you're talking about. It reminds me of the sounds of a single IndyCar on track at IMS. That sort of echoey drone as the car passes the cameras/mics and just hangs in the air. It's so good. :D

That Doppler effect while the engines are headed down the backstretch and the engines sound like they're spooling up as they're getting ready to fly past. That's a sound I'll never get tired of hearing.

I remember that from Talladega. I love that effect too.

Hell yeah, that's the one. When you're driving to Pocono on a Friday for qualifying, there are usually cars on the track. It's obviously always our first time going to the track since the year before, and driving through the middle of nowhere and hearing that roar from a few minutes down the road (before you even see any hint of a giant racing facility)... incredible.

You need to try Bristol once. Without earplugs.

I've done it almost every year since 1988. :)

I've heard it can be quite deafening. With my tolerance, I'd probably have to go with earplugs AND a headset. It'd still probably rumble through my body and feel like my organs were going to shift out of position... that's how I imagine it, anyway. haha

I don't wear earplugs at Pocono, though. There's enough open space and the field is strung out enough that I'm not really affected all that much by it. My wife and I are generally quiet people though, so it can be quite a shock to the system when you go somewhere that loud for that long.

I didn't wear earplugs when I went to the Brickyard 400 but I used them for Bristol. There's just no way I could have done without them.

I used to use them years ago at Dover. I never needed to for Charlotte and any track I've been to other than Charlotte. But I always have a headset these days. A full points race would be too much in person without a scanner.

Ahhh scanners... do the old school ones even still work? We had a brand new one our first year ('96), and we used it sporadically in the years that followed. We still have it, although in this day of Sprint Vision (or whatever the hell it's called), I have no idea if it'd still work.

I always got a kick about how the channel numbers were the driver numbers. Simpler times, man. :)

We used to rent them and sit there doing the whole dance before race time trying to get all the channels working. I had bought a scanner and 2 head sets years ago but I think they ended up with my ex when we split.... Now I just pony up for Sprint Vision.

The inside of the turns at Salem during the ARCA races are enough for me, thanks.

Scanners are fun, though I've only taken mine to one race. Got to listen to Matt Crafton cuss several times at Kentucky one year during a truck race. I use mine for railroad stuff and don't feel like putting in a bunch of new channels for just a few uses each year.

Agreed. And for whatever reason, I remember that the infield at IRP was really loud compared to the other ARCA races we've done.

I didn't need them for Pocono or Talladega, and if you're up high at Michigan you're fine.

I made the mistake of forgetting mine and standing behind the fence off 4 during practice though - there's nothing like physically feeling your eardrums move inside your head.

Memory loss due to not using them, imo.
