Remember when Marty Reid declared Ryan Blaney the winner at Kentucky on the white flag lap?

Huffington Post says he got fired over that.

Pretty sure there's more to the story than that.

Yeah, like the fact he does it every week.

Lest we forget that he can't tell Helio Castroneves from Ryan Hunter-Reay in this year's Indy 500.

This is why you shouldn't demote Paul Page to hot dog eating contests.

Sucks for Marty but it is what it is. You fuck up, you get fired. I never understood why ESPN didn't have Bestwick doing NNS races anyway. Dude is a trillion times better than Reid

People can say about Reid what they want, but what I will always remember is how well he handled Wheldon's death.

^^^ Very true. I'd hate to have my employer "go another direction" and have millions of people thrilled to hear about it. I also (obviously) found that he screwed up a lot, but it's sad to see anyone who's been in the business for such a long time get canned.

He didn't really fuck up anymore than Paul Page did. The Indycar calls with Bobby Unser, Paul Page and Sam Posey used to be hilarious because Posey and Page constantly got stuff wrong and Unser would correct them.

Still, Reid's call during that terrbile Vegas mess was class as it was during the Truck race at Daytona when Bodine went into the fence.

I'm not sorry he's gone, because I didn't particularly like his style (or mistakes), but I think unless he did something stellarly stupid I'd much rather hear that ESPN simply moved him somewhere else.

Maybe ABC/ESPN will pull Jenkin's out of retirement for their Indycar stuff.

Hey, if all else fails for Marty, he can always become an assistant in Bill Weber's magic show.

In all my time of watching the sport, the only guy that messed up as often (although not quite as badly) was Ken Squier. Most laughed it off with Ken, but for some reason, Marty Reid was never afforded that same luxury.

Murray Walker made Marty look like the shining example of perfection.

I wonder if this is something to do with ESPN wanting out at the end of this year, and Marty's contract was up for renewal now and they didn't want to sign him back up again knowing potentially that they were dumping the NASCAR coverage in a few weeks time (or even that the deal has been done already with Fox and NBC and re-signing Marty would simply be like employing him for 7 weeks work then paying him another 45 for doing nowt).

Bit of a shame, I liked Marty after the way he handled Dan's death.

They all fuck up, Mike Joy still gets ripped for his "and that destroyed the front end of Newman's car!" line. But the good ones outweigh that with actual informative commentary and class. That's why Ken Squier is considered a legend and Mike Joy the best we have today. Marty Reid had more than his share of fuckups (harsh but true) and never really balanced that out with any particularly great calls IMO. He did handle a very difficult situation very classily at Vegas though.

Joy did the same thing in the Bud Shootout; Jeff Gordon was barrel rolling and he points out that Kurt Busch's car is destroyed.

Who can forget Jerry Punch's amazing call at the flag here....

"REMEMBERTHESTARTFINISHLINEIS---"
"....and he gets him."

Gets me every time. I guess Punch is just suited for the pits, because he's fine down there!

In other news, Kyle Larson makes his Cup debut at Charlotte in the 51. Good spot to do it, I think. He's also running Martinsville, which should be interesting. Has he ever run there? My guess would be no, but I'm not sure.

Nelson Piquet Jr. has been fined $10,000 by NASCAR for jokingly posting "fag" on one of Parker Kilgerman's instagram photos.
