2014 Schedule Rumor: Cup Series will race at Road America and Southern 500 at Darlington returns to Labor Day Weekend.

Quote:
UPDATE:The 2014 Sprint Cup schedule is being debated behind closed doors, and some quite interesting twists appear on the table at the moment. Just a few weeks ago it looked like NASCAR didn't plan any major, or even minor, changes for 2014. Now, however, word is things have, for some reason, changed. What NASCAR eventually does with next year's Cup calendar seems up for review, with few sacred cows. Don't make any hotel reservations, but here are some possible moves:
-- Homestead might lose its spot as the season finale;
-- Phoenix might gain the final spot on the 2014 tour;
-- Sonoma could earn a spot in the playoffs, adding a California stop to the chase;
-- Road America, that picturesque road course at Elkhart Lake, Wis., an hour north of Milwaukee, could get a slot in the 2014 Cup schedule (even though NASCAR's Brian France earlier this year said he planned no new tracks on the tour next season);
-- how to fit a new track in the schedule? Dover could lose its late spring Cup weekend (keeping its early fall Cup date, in the chase), track boss Denis McGlynn, not unaccustomed to such speculation, would surely fight hard to keep both;
-- and -- hold your horses -- Darlington might even get its traditional Labor Day weekend Southern 500 back;
-- to fill that Mother's Day Saturday night slot, maybe a swap with Atlanta;
Of course after all this debate NASCAR might simply decide not to make any changes for 2014.(MikeMulhern.net)(9-17-2013)

Give Kansas's second date to Atlanta and it's absolutely perfect.

As much as I like Atlanta on Labor Day weekend, that weekend belongs to Darlington.

Watch it not happen, tho.

A good rumor.

I'd rather see Road Atlanta than Road America, but it would still be a welcome addition.

I'd have thought Road Altanta would be a higher priority for NASCAR since they own it but I'd be quiet happy for one of those shit cookie cutter tracks to loose their date for it. Sounds like they're trying to free up the Homestead slot for something though.

Phoenix as the finale? I know they have great attendance but I'm not sure I like that. Homestead is fine. Dover is not an ISC track so good luck pulling that date. But as far as all these rumors, I'll believe it when I see it as well.

Why would Furniture Row be content with Burton or Martin? They're a chase contending team this year, I doubt they'll just drop that to get a washed up driver. I'd bet on a hot young driver.

Or, give Phoenix the Mother's Day weekend slot, put race #2 (if they must have two, ugh) somewhere else, then give Atlanta the final race again.

That's what I'd love to see, but I'm not entirely sure these rumors are legit... we'll find out soon enough! :flag:

Phoenix should not be the finale. However, if Phoenix still holds 2 races, they need to be early and late in the year, due to the heat.

Why not have the finale at Vegas, and do the awards stuff straight from there?

Even though that seems completely logical.... NASCAR hates Bruton.

Maybe they are trying to save the teams money without loosing face, Phoenix is a lot closer to Vegas than Miami right?

Now that wouldn't be a bad idea. My idea for the Chase races:

Chicagoland
New Hampshire
Dover
Charlotte
Talladega
Texas
Martinsville
Sears Point
Phoenix
Las Vegas

Yes, Las Vegas and Phoenix are only 300 miles apart.

I'll be happy if some of these things happen, particularly the road course stuff. I've always felt it's wrong that there're 4 SS races and only 2 roadies and none in the Chase.

Pretty sure most teams travel all the way back to Charlotte on Monday/Tuesday regardless of where next week's race is.

You guys are forgetting that this is a Mike Mulhern rumor, which means that it is likely that it will never happen.
