I wonder what happened. It may just be me, but that picture doesn't look all that bad.

Something apparently broke on his car coming out of turn 4, and he veered head on into the wall.... :( God Speed Jason.

Shane Hmiels crash a couple years ago, now this with Jason....man, I really wish guys like Kasey and Tony would at least consider dialing back their sprint car participation. This really blows.

Never gonna happen, for most of them this is a life. Not just a career. Just because it wasn't a 'big' money NASCAR race, it didn't make the race any less important to them. Look at the way Tony races. He puts the same amount of effort into his Chili Bowl efforts that he does in Cup.

Anyone could die in any racing accident in any series. Sure the more races you race in the better your chances are but really what this comes down to is something undetermined went seriously wrong and Jason Leffler is dead. He wasn't doing much top tier racing this year and this just happened to be his time.

Think I only got one chance to see Jason race in person, that was at IRP in 2011 when USAC ran the same night as ARCA. I shot a couple photos of his car during USAC qualifying. Didn't get any during the race since it was dark by then and I really couldn't take any worthwhile night photos:

Something broke on the car and he hit the T4 wall head on, then flipped. At least that's the story from the local short track boards. The story gets mirky from there.

The shitty part is that while all sprint car racing is dangerous (racing in general is) this was a winged car, which are supposed to be safer than their USAC counterparts. Just a shame, but it comes with the territory.

I too wondered about some of the other guys commitment to running the sprints after this. As I said, Kasey and Tony run almost exclusively with the tin on top. Tony can and will run whatever he wants because he owns his Cup car, but Kasey drives for Hendrick and you have to wonder at what point at the sponsors/car owners going to step in and say no more sprints.

RIP

I was wondering if Ganassi/Turner might tighten the noose on Larson's extracurricular activities now, which consists mainly of racing these types of cars.

A racer is going to race. I have no problem with these guys running dirt races. Heck I would too. Just sucks Jason lost his life at such an early age in life. It pains me to think of his son who he was obviously really close to. God speed.
