Got home with 50 laps to go. By the time I fast forwarded through all the nothing going on and 50 million commercials there was about 30 laps to go. What I saw wasn't bad. The finish was pretty good due. My expectation was for a slingshot and I'm glad it didn't happen.

What was it, 1997 when Mark Martin won the 1st caution free race at 'Dega? Yeah, somehow I remember that race thinking it was a lot more exciting than what I saw yesterday. Probably because it felt less manufactured. NASCAR, I have no answers for you. All I can say is in the last 15 years you've really lost something. Every race need not be a barnburner, but at least one of them should've been to this point in the year.

Expect much more of the same at Darlington. Running that at night is a mistake. That shitty SC asphalt needs hot sun to work it's black magic.

I think what made NASCAR so fun to watch in the 90's to early 00's was the fact that there were so many great or spectacular races/finishes/crashes. Couple that with that abilitly to stumble across YouTube videos of all these finishes/wrecks, it boosted the popularity of the sport like nothing else. But, unfortunately, I believe that is it's undoing. People began to realize that not every race or finish is like the highlight clips they've seen on the internet which became accessable with a few key strokes. Heck even this place has evolved from a place to find those rare videos to mostly a chat board.... So anyway, that's when NASCAR felt pressure to keep that wave going and got desperate with rules changes, track repaving, etc. That said, I expect NASCAR to get back on track in the future... problem is they just have to let it happen rather than make it happen.

The race was okay. While it was pack racing, the pack was somehow disjointed and lacked the excitement of usual Talladega races, surely due to the cooling issue. I hope NASCAR addresses it before the fall race. The finish was a let down for sure, but I've seen way worse, I guess our standards and expectations for Talladega are way too high anymore. Overall it was a great Dega' weekend with spectacular crashes, big ones and flips. No complaints here.

Here is the most detailed update to date on Eric McClure.

"I think we ought to make it a figure eight. I mean if we could make it a figure eight it would be perfect. It would absolutely be perfect here. It would be better than what we have. That is going to be my vote next week is that we make it a figure eight and/or we can stop at the half way make a break and turn around and go backwards the rest of the way. Then with 10 to go we split the field in half and half go the regular direction and half of them go backwards.”

I don't know how he kept a straight face through that bout of sargasm (yes, with a g) but for that he deserves an Oscar.

Maybe it was just the way I was raised (haha), but I've always been weary of hearing Tony's smart-assed comments. Most of the time, I just roll my eyes and say "friggin' Tony, bein' all dickey". He's always been a bit of an Earnhardt wannabe that way, which is much less tolerable than when Earnhardt was actually being Earnhardt.

This time, though, I applaud him. I was sick of seeing guys overheating and blowing engines, and that fuel hiccup for a ton of cars was absolutely unneccessary and unprecedented. Cars will wreck when drivers make mistakes (such as the one Tony was involved in), but drivers were forced to make moves that put them into bad situations in the first place.

I actually applaud Tony this time around - not to mention the beauty of his delivery. heheh
