They say the cars hit the wall because they need to use up every inch of tack on exit to go fast. In every video game I've ever played, I've never had a problem with that turn. Like, I never get close to the wall and don't need to. Its like the last place I am likely to hit.

Anyone else?

I've been looking back on past races and always thought it odd that the wall of champions didn't become a "Thing" until about 1997 (and really took off after 1999 obviously)

I guess pre 1996, the straight that preceeded it was more a section of fast sweeping curves that kept the speed of the cars down and made the final chicane less of a challenge.
People in the 80s/early 90s were more likely to spin on entry or run through the gravel (lol) there rather than hit the wall.

A lot of the crashes there came from people bouncing off the curbs, landing a meter off the line, and it's enough to set you up for the slam, aka Barrichello and Heidfeld in 2001.
