The corner's also adverse camber which must have an effect on standing water

correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's "common knowledge" there is quite a bump there - as you point out, a transition in surface. Raikkonen lost it there in 2001 and was picked up by Alesi. Brundle lost it there as well, 20 years ago.

Sorry but Raikkonen had a rear left suspension failure that caused his crash back then

The Raikkonen and Alesi crash was at the same corner.

False, that was between both apexes of Dunlop corner too. Remember Irvine nearly hit a wheel before braking for Degner 1

There is a bump, and a surface change, and a wet patch.

Ok.

That can send you off hard when you're on the edge and that happened to Sutil. Fine. But you're not supposed to be on the edge when coming onto a double yellow with track workers on the side, I'm with Ellis here.

At first, I thought it was some kind of slow impact only made worse by the truck height (ala de Villota), but after seeing the video and the huge energy the car still has...
This time, the driver gets some compassion because he's the only victim, but usually this kind of stuff ends up with innocent pedestrians in hospital (or worse), and had a driver hurt a marshall this bad he would be flogged so hard for it he would probably be banned from the championship altogether.

I wouldn't be that hard towards Bianchi before there's an official report abou telemetry or a official footage of what happened before he went off the track. FIA says they're not showing any of that because they want to protect Bianchi, but I feel that's a made up excuse, since people are already blaming him. I fail to understand how he was not able slow down more, from 210km/h to 203km/h. That's basically nothing considering he went over a gravel trap.

While I agree that general yellow flag discipline is pretty poor, I don't feel like we can comment on this specific incident until we know exactly what happened. All we've seen is the last few metres before he hits the JCB - it still could be a car failure.

It doesn't change the root of the problem: no matter the failure, human or mechanical, in any crash in a yellow zone, the final speed and outcome against trackside men and machines is directly correlated to the initial speed, and that appeared to be too high in that area for all drivers. Unless it's a stuck throttle as I had mentioned earlier in the thread.

I always thought it was between the hairpin and Spoon!

Mäth is basically right; it was the second part of Dunlop, round by where the east circuit splits off:

It's actually a bit unsettling to see wheels flying about like that nowadays!

I believe the 1st part of Dunlop was re-profiled slightly after 2001 to give a bit more runoff at the point where Kimi/Alesi hit the wall.

iirc they added more runoff there for motogp. remember the commentators talking about it in 2002.

i never realised the track lay out was changed ever so slightly. always thought nothing changed apart from 130r and the chicane (which commentators still refer to as "where senna and prost came together", while in fact that was further down the road.

It's been over 10 years since the changes but every time I play suzuka on a racing game I still get confused about where the pit lane is.
Before or after the chicane? ..too late, just backed off for no reason! :slaphead:
