Hamilton had just set his fastest lap 1:27.621 just before he went off.

BTW Pirelli are using special winter tyres this week designed for the cold temperatures, If they don't rain they will run a day of wet testing on Friday by artificially soaking the track.

we just got our first crash as there is debris on the track.

Quote:
11:52 The car is back on the low loader and being ferried rapidly back to the Mercedes garage.

11:51 AUTOSPORT technical expert Craig Scarborough offers his view of that crash, and suggests it may have been caused by a failure:

@ScarbsF1: "Hamilton has just gone off track at T1, there was a lot of debris left on track as black rubber marks started, suggesting something's failed."

11:49 Looks like a fair bit of damage on the W05. The course car and marshals are cleaning the circuit well before Turn 1 too.

11:46 Scratch that - it seems Hamilton is in the Turn 1 barriers. Marshals are picking up bodywork on the main straight.

Didn't Lewis have a brake failure on his 1st day of testing a year ago?

Live updates through the day on Sky Sports News so they will likely show something in there next update (I'll have a compilation of those updates online later tonight).

Maybe the FW failed and got stuck under the car and driver couldnt steer anymore. Something like Alonso Sepang 2013??

From Autosport:

Quote:
11:59 AUTOSPORT's spotters on the ground confirm that it was a front wing failure Mercedes are referring to.

It shattered well before Turn 1 and left Hamilton a helpless passenger, in much the same way as Fernando Alonso's wing broke in Malaysia last year.

Hamilton was able to climb out the car and appeared unhurt.

I think the noses should be like last year for safety reasons. Cuz to me it seems that with those low noses when suddenly you have a failure like this one and cant steer the car will go under the tyre barriers!!! Just remember Kovalainens crash in Spain 2008.
Half of the car was under the tyre barriers

Same thing can happen with a higher nose.

For instance Timo Glock went under the tyre barrier when he crashed at Suzuka in 2009 & the Toyota had a high nose.

McLaren not running because of a glitch, Can't get the car started.

Maybe its then how the tyre barriers were mounted on those specific areas of track..

It was just a crash, stop overanalyzing it. High noses, low noses, it really doesn't matter.

That is quite interesting. I wonder if they were in a hurry to get the car track-ready, and the paint had been applied in a thin layer, or if they maybe even didn't leave it to dry!?

Do McLaren's electronics subsidiary still supply the whole grid with ECUs? If so, then irony.

The cars sound good but they're not loud.
