Formula One Testing at Circuit de Catalunya by Owain Shaw Photo, on Flickr I'm starting this now because there's a tossing massive 5 day weekend here in Spain and I'm going to the Basque Country, so by the time I get back it will be next week so ... go crazy, but please nobody rob my house while I'm away. (Mods may also close this until a suitable re-opening time.) Utterly pointless historical text I wrote when I was bored in Winter 2011 ... Spoiler: Schedule: Friday 10 May Free Practice One – 1000-1130 Local (0900-1030 BST) Free Practice Two – 1400-1530 Local (1300-1430 BST) Saturday 11 May Free Practice Three – 1100-1200 Local (1000-1100 BST) Qualifying – 1400 Local (1300 BST) Sunday 12 May Race – 1400 Local (1300 BST) There is shockingly little indication that the race will be sponsored by Santander, despite them sponsoring anything that doesn't move for more than 30 seconds, but this being their de facto home race, I'd expect to see some of their logos dotted around the place ... I can also offer you a sneak preview of the podium ceremony. Spoiler: Weather Weekend meteorologicos mit Paula/the site I use here in Spain ... long race forecasts are notoriously dodgy but at the time of writing there are showers forecast for the three days of race weekend. Your mileage will almost invariably vary ... http://www.tiempo.com/montmelo.htm Hopefully that about does it ... Boutros, Boutros-Ghali |

the lack of replies proves just how popular this race is among motorsport fans. |

This is the 23rd race at the Circuit de Catalunya since its first appearance in 1991. Every single race, bar one, has been won from a front row starting position. The only exception was 1996, where Schumacher won from the next best place, 3rd. Of the 21 races won from the front row, 17 of those were from the pole (only exceptions: Mansell (1991), Hill (1994), Hakkinen (2000) and Vettel (2011)). This track therefore has an 77% pole to win conversion rate. In 22 races, that's absolutely amazing. |

with DRS and the tyres, there's hope it might be a good race after all. I remember the very first races on this circuit had really great overtakings, and I am not only referring to the famous Senna vs. Mansell battle. And all the specialized media were stating that this is the way a circuit should be... how things can change... |

This place works perfectly for bikes, not so much for cars. Its not just the last corner, but also the first corner, the braking zone never has been long enough. Just get this race out of the way and move onto 2 of the best races, Monaco and Montreal. |

Pain in Spain falls mostly at the racetrack that one should happen this weekend and not on mother's day |

Interesting to see if the second DRS zone will improve overtaking. I guess it will be located on the back straigth. Maybe it can get cars closer to the car in front before the main drs zone on SF. |

I assume the ridiculous final chicane was added to improve overtaking? It didn't work. Can we have the nice final corner back? |

Scorcho! Hethhethheth, Chris Waddle. The older English members might know why. |

But it was only on a few years ago! Wait, make that 13 years ago since it ended, 19 since it started. Fuck, that makes me feel old. |

Leaving next wednesday and drive the 1400km to Spain to attend my 3rd Spanish GP! Atmosphere is great and weather almost always very nice compared to the rain over here in Holland |

Bono estente. Early forecast says showers for Sunday. It has been ages since the last wet Spanish GP (1996). However, I predict nothing but scorchio. |

Well it was snowing a couple days ago in Andalucia so why not rain in Catalunya in a few days? |

As far as I know, McLaren, Williams and Caterham are bringing their Save-our-Season upgrades to this race. Lotus seem to have forgotten how to communicate. Boullier says "Most teams tend to bring a fairly major upgrade package to the first European race of the season and we’ll be no exception" while Allison says there's going to be "Nothing revolutionary" on the E21. |

The two statements don't appear to contradict each other. |
