At least we actually have live coverage now hurr, I remember some european races finishing at around 2am during Channel Ten's Big Brother era

Were you watching during the Chanel 9 era? Every race started between 10.30 - 12 at night. Only Brazil and Argentina were shown live and even then I suspect they were delayed as they didn't finish until 6 - 6.30 am. Were tough times indeed for a high school kid.

It's actually an incredibly weird feeling to be preparing myself for a grand prix at 5pm in the afternoon! Especially with 5-6 hours of Bathurst rolling into it

I like early Sunday races. Race is over by 10 am so you can still enjoy the rest of the day. Now most of the races are from 14 to 16h with a possible beautiful Sunday afternoon ruined and an unhappy girlfriend.

If every race started at 9am West-European Time, everyone from the UK to Australia could see it at a reasonable hour.

All...none of them? The only comment on the start time is actually a comment wanting a LESS socialable start time for Europeans.

I think it was a preemptive post by Scotty because there are bound to be posts complaining about it :p

Some important informations regarding the track for the upcoming race:

a) Due to the celebrations of the 50 years of Suzuka Circuit, the track was resurfaced frm the Dunlop Corner to the Casio Triangle. That resurfacing made the track even faster. (Formula Nippon and SuperGT saw some lap records this years in their pre season tests). Also at that areas a new draining system was installed to avoid standing water that has been a problem in the last years in the circuit.

b) DRS zone was (like in many tracks this year) shortened a little bit, a 20 meters difference from the last year. The detection zone will be 50 meters before the Casio Triangle. Last year the DRS was not very effective there, making it even shorter seems to be a wrong decision by the FIA. But we must wait and see.

Thanks for that info

You know, when tracks are resurfaced, it's expected for them to become quicker as normally newer tarmacs provides more grip. But still, I don't expect the 2006 times to be even close to being beaten. Part of the track will give more grip but that will be kind of neutralised by the lack of full EBD

Massa set the pole in 2006 with a 1:29.5, last year Vettel did a 1:30.4, I don't think we will see a new pole record, but maybe a high 1:29 is possible.

2006 had fuel in Q3, I think Schumacher did a 1.28.7 in Q2 on low fuel.

This year I'd be surprised if times went beneath 2011 as they've lost the EBDs. Anything around 1.31.5 may take pole if you look at the times compared to 2011 on other tracks.

Now it's time to focus on the race ahead. @gvandergarde will be in Heikki's car in FP1 on Friday and then Heikki's back in as per normal.

what?

And that's not true from what I've read. There's a tropical storm around the Pacific, RtN probably knows more about it.

It could hit Japan during the weekend although its path is currently predicted to miss Japan.

Maliksi will miss Japan by a couple of hundred miles.

Forecast still says dry for all 3 days.

Well, BBC suggests that there will be showers further east, closer to Tokyo, but apart from that there's very little else.

Erh, the track record is from Schumacher(2006) 1.28.9. I hate the stupid previous Q3 rule which had provided so much fake poles as this one.

Agreed. The old system was really bad, it killed the whole purpose of a qualifying session that is to test the speed of a driver in a single lap, its good that we have the system we have right now, even if I would prefer the old system of friday and saturday, with qualifying tyres, 60 minutes sessions, those were the days! I remember at Suzuka in 1991, the qualifying tyres were so soft that the drivers had to make an unbeliveable slow warm up lap otherwise the tyres would be really bad before the fast lap ended. Very nice year it was.

Well, the three at the back usually look like that, and the three at the front have their own special circumstances to feel slightly awkward about.
