I mean the irony of Tilke's tracks is that the best one, Istanbul Park, has fallen off the calendar just as it was starting to get established. Did Tilke do Abu Dhabi? Because that's a horrible circuit except for Turns 2-3

Yeah he did, but some changes (such as the chicane in the first sector) were made after his design, because they wanted the grandstand so close to the track that it had no run off.

Similarly, Tilke had the grandstand on the right side of the long straight further away from the wall, and the owners moved it closer, resulting in the crowd not being able to see the cars, so they had to adjust the track width.

Oh right. Why couldn't Istanbul Park have been in Abu Dhabi? Because I just find the circuit horrific. Sector 3 is somewhat redeemable, but the off-camber corners make the circuit seem laborious and difficult. I'm sure if you're there, it's amazing. But watching it on TV, well, it just isn't.

A slow point and squirt sector has never achieved anything in this sport. Sector 1 of Istanbul? Sector 2 of Shanghai? Sector 3 of Abu Dhabi? Just make it open, flat out, maybe 1 hairpin, tops.

Tilke's problem is that he pretty much has 1 template he is now running off. Straight, slow corner, straight, slow corner, rhythm section, do it all again. Toss in a nice grandstand chuck us $100m bobs your uncle.

Almost none of that fits the FIA requirements, such as a hairpin of X degrees after a straight of Y length.

So yeah, you could do it, but it wouldn't mean it'd get used for anything. Tilke races in VLN. He knows what a good track is.

Already been done.

To play Devil's Advocate, I would like to see one or two other designers get a chance to design a new F1 track, if only to see how much freedom there is in the rulebook.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Here's a (not very in depth) article on it.

http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2007/12/16/d ... the-rules/

Old circuits which violate these rules are grandfathered in, so don't need to change.

And this is before everything else, such as run off, access road, and building layout. Tilke doesn't just draw a layout on paper and fuck off, he does the entire circuit grounds, and sometimes the external roads to the circuit.

If Tilke was presented with a hill I'm sure he would design one hell of a track. The current land he gets is dead flat.

Any chance you could upload a lap of the SC going around the track Toto?

I'm guessing your hacking into some Sat Feed to get those images. :p

More quality Indian workmanship..

One only hopes this doesn't turn into a 2010 Commonwealth Games type situation. :o

Should call the people from Spa, happened hilariously much since the introduction of the new building. (with one LMS red flag during the race as the best of those)

That was a regional power loss, not only the circuit. So don't blame the circuit, blame Wallonië

Ah yes, the lack of backup power at the track caused that. The 100 other powercuts which affected the media-center, pitlane and VIP-suites in the first dozen months since the renovation were not all due to "Wallonië" though :)
