Fuji TV won't be going to Bahrain, same with some other journalists.

Anyway, here's Bernie being stupid

Quote:
Bernie Ecclestone met with the team bosses in Shanghai on Friday lunchtime and insisted afterwards that the Bahrain GP is still going ahead.

The team used the opportunity to express their concerns, but Ecclestone denied that the subject had even been the main focus of the meeting.

“I just asked if anybody had any problems, and everybody said no problem at all,” he said.

“This race is on the calendar, it’s been on the calendar for quite a long time. We will be there. All the teams are happy to be there.”

Asked whether he had any concerns, he said: “Not at all. We haven’t got any problems.”

Questioned about doubts expressed in the media, he added: “That’s the problem, it’s been discussed by the media, they don’t have any idea what’s going on.

“I know people that live there, and it’s all very quiet.”

When asked by Sky News whether he was going to the race, he said: “What a stupid question. You’re going to get a stupid answer. What would you expect?”

Regarding the political aspect, Ecclestone said: “What F1 has done for Bahrain is put Bahrain on the map. They will sort out their internal problems, I’m quite sure.

“I’m happy that our position is quite clear, we don’t get involved in the politics in a country.

“We has some problems in England recently,

Interesting statements by the FIA.

Quote:
"The FIA must make rational decisions based on the information provided to us by the Bahraini authorities and by the Commercial Rights Holder."

So basically, the FIA are saying they get to make the decision, but aren't responsible for it? So if they decide to host the race but it goes wrong, they'll blame FOM and the local authorities? That's rather convenient for them.

Well, the Bahrain GP certainly won't be a boring event. The race could be a borefest though...but I kinda miss the track now that I think about it. 8O

The way its configured and if they get the DRS where it doesn't make passing too easy it could be a good race.

Something major will happen at the race, what it may be is anyone's guess.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Bernie wouldn't go to Bahrain for self-protection :D

Terrible terrible terrible decision.

Let's start placing bets on the following

1: Will Bernie attend the race or stay home with some lousy reason
2: What lap will the first protester enter the track
3: How many SC periods because of protesters

1. Probably and he will pretend there's nothing going on
2. First 10 mins of practice
3. 1 or 2

Well, I don't think this is the last of it this weekend by any means.

The reality is I'll be watching a motor race next weekend constantly hoping everyone stays safe and that nothing kicks off. That means I won't be enjoying the actual racing, so it detracts from the event. I just pray no-one gets onto the track because if anything does happen then the sport is going to get dragged down into a hole that might take it years to recover from.

Still, F1Zone will be going (not me), so let's just hope it's safe.

I don't think anything will happen on track. Cameras will be told not to show anything that might look suspicious (the streakers that happen now and then at football matches are mostly not shown). And the regime will have as much as possible police/army/whatever that any protest would immediately broken down.

Furthermore it's not a circuit where you have people along the whole track attending. So they will probably put all the audience at the start/finish line, so they can better control the situation.

And another thing, many of the protesters seems to be 'poor', I can't see where they can get the money to buy the very expensive tickets...

I'm assuming any potential protestors aren't intending on paying to get in...

I'm guessing if anything happens, it'll happen outside the track rather than on it. They're going to have a fuckload of security there to stop anyone getting in in the first place.

Of course, but what about the marshals? We all have to assume they'll be on 'our' side...

Quote:
"Whether it is teaching them (marshals) how to conduct themselves or how to react to a particular situation; they have to be perfect," said Mr Fayez.

He said the majority of marshals were university students, but added there were also bankers, other private sector workers and government employees involved, including engineers and technology specialists.

Sounds like they've been fairly hand-picked.

The largest protest during last year's demonstrations was 300,000 strong.

I doubt whether the Saudi army presence that is in the country would be able to hold that number back should it materialise.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

I'm just going to be uneasy until everyone leaves Bahrain. I wouldn't be surprised if they waited until Thursday to get there and even maybe stayed in nearby Qatar.

I know people say 'yes but F1 goes to China and there were riots in England last year'. Granted, China has an appalling human rights record, but the difference here is that protesters have vowed to directly target F1 and the personnel involved with it. One team boss has said that he is being constantly bombarded with questions from mechanics etc who say they don't want to go.

I see nothing happening on the track. But considering we had demonstrations 20 Kilometers far away from the track I imagine how unpleasant will the environment be in the surroundings of the track.

for some reason I think nobody lives in Bahrain and that the only thing there is is the track and a few hundred people going there every year.
