I'd have argued that he exceeded the track limits to gain the place. :p Was good hard racing. Nice to see it without any needless penalties.

The off-throttle blown diffuser farce is over, Ferrari and Sauber have agreed to allow as much blowing as the teams like.

Normal service to be resumed in Germany.

so back to Valencia status, this race in Silverstone was a one off?

I really don't understand a thing about the blown diffuser and hot and cold throttle.

it's pretty easy:

the exaust brings warm air into the diffuser, which adds extra downforce
the problem with this was that when the drivers wheren't using the throttle (when braking and when into a corner), there were no exhaust gasses, so no extra downforce was generated and the car suddenly lost downforce when the driver didn't push the throttle
so the teams manipulated the engines to still produce exhaust gasses even when the driver wasn't on the throttle

While the FIA didn't excatly handle things brilliantly, I think the teams also share a big portion of the blame over the OTBD row. Lets not forget that the FIA informed the teams of the changes back in early May so they have had 2 months to prepare for it.

The teams should have said when the ban was 1st announced that they had problems running at the 10% limit & they all should have sat down then to work out some sort of comprimise rather than wait untill the last minuite.

There was a nice discussion about the blown diffusor in "Sport Talk from Hangar 7" on RedBull TV
One of the guest was the Williams co-owner Toto Wolff. He said Williams refused to develop a blown diffusor because of the £15 million invoice Cosworth would send. Never the less they agreed on going back to the Valencia rules because of their Renault deal for next year.

What ever position you have in that discussion, FIA screwed this one up. You ban such things after the season because it has nothing to do with safety and it's not clear cut illegal. Active suspension was banned after the season, TC was banned after the season...

Why Ferrari and Sauber accepted it? Both seemed to benefits from the ban, well, in Sauber's case it is a certainty

Report: Raikkonen to replace Webber at Red Bull

Quote:
Jul.12 (GMM) Red Bull is planning to pair Sebastian Vettel with his friend Kimi Raikkonen in 2012.That is the sensational claim of the high-circulation German newspaper Bild-Zeitung, less than two days after Mark Webber ignored team orders at the end of the British grand prix.2007 world champion and Finn Raikkonen, 31, left formula one at the end of 2009, and Red Bull team boss Christian Horner was quoted on Monday as saying "I believe he has put F1 behind him".Bild said the plan to replace Australian Webber with Raikkonen is "top secret" but divulged the information of a source "at the highest level".German Vettel remains friends with Raikkonen, the pair often meeting in Switzerland to play badminton. Asked recently who his ideal teammate is, the reigning world champion replied: "Kimi."The former Ferrari and McLaren race winner had talks with Red Bull last year and has now "apparently changed his mind" about wanting to stay in rallying and NASCAR.And referring to Webber, Red Bull's driver manager Helmut Marko told Bild recently: "We have other options but I don't want to talk about them now."The report also said Raikkonen told a Finnish journalist recently: "I have never said that my formula one career is over."

According to the Daily Mail (possible bullshit then), Whitmarsh has been given 2 races to improve results or else.

The same story was also in the Times.

Whitmarsh has until the end of the month to improve or he will be shown the door.

His behaviour over the Silverstone weekend probably didn't help his cause either, never mind the results.

Pretty harsh on Whitmarsh even if he is annoying. He has finished 3rd and 2nd since taking over with either of those placing likely this year. Has beaten Ferrari in both seasons something Mclaren did only once between 1999 and 2009 [in 2005] and has the best lineup on the grid. They've won 2 races in 09, 5 last season, already got 2 so far this year.

Whatsmore the only senior engineer to have left is Pat Fry [although Ferrari may be taking a few more if Fry has his way]. Ron Dennis managed to drive away Adrian Newey, Nicolas Tombazis, Peter Prodromo who now all work for RBR and managed to annoy/alienate Kimi Raikkonen, Juan Pablo Montoya and Fernando Alonso.

It's far from perfect, and their development of their cars has been a long way off Ferrari and Red Bull in 2010 and 2011 to date but it wasn't exactly all hunky dorry prior to Whitmarsh taking over despite the titles. The Mclaren prior to the useless 2009 car were all just evolutions of the 2006 car which was based on Newey's flawed MP4/18 anyway.

McLarens had some random results this season, but so has everyone apart from Red Bull. They are sitting comfortably 2nd in the constructors.
