What a masterclass from Alonso

Seems to me that qualifying is very crucial for Alonso. If he starts at the front, he ends at the front. If he starts in the mid or at the back, it doesn´t improve in the race.

Perez just needs to finish ahead of Hamilton to secure 2nd spot and his place at Red Bull

Best result for Stroll since Melbourne. I expected him to drop back but he didn´t.
Fantastic result again for Norris, at this rate he could overtake Hamilton for 3rd in the championship.
And late but great wake up call for Alpha Tauri, 4 races ago they were last in the championship and now Williams should get worried not to lose 7th place to them.

But, apart of the Alonso Perez battle in the end, a rather boring Brazilian GP. Which is a pity, because this was the last decent track of the season. Vegas will be all about the forced but artificial show, and Abu Dhabi is...

Epic Battle Onboards Alonso vs Perez:

If you ever ask yourself why we persevere through the politics, the drama, the bullshit, the boring bits of F1: moments like this battle are why. It was already enjoyable and tactical before the attack, the final two laps were the icing on the cake.

While Alonso was working that outside line at the final corner (genius idea), Perez tried it and it didn't work for him. So he focused on the hairpin where he lost most time, and managed to find a slightly different line that kept him closer than the laps before. Absolute masterclass. Less spectacular than wheel-banging so it won't make history, but it's seriously up there with Arnoux/Villeneuve or Massa/Kubica, and actually smarter and more respectful.

Checo lost the position, but this is hopefully a confidence booster for him because few people can claim to have had the start of an answer to Alonso's genius racecraft.

Useless stat I just found by accident:

Hamilton and Verstappen both scored their 50th win in Austin, and 51st win in Mexico. Hamilton won his 52nd in Brazil, no reason to assume Verstappen won´t take that as well.

No surprises there.
Hamilton won his 53rd at Abu Dhabi, this year we´re going to Vegas first which Verstappen will probably win as well.

So... Alonso and Perez cross the finishline... with Alonso in front.
Then they cross the startline... with Perez in front.
And then they pass the :flag:

I thought the person with the :flag: should stand next to the finishline.
Start and finish should always be the same line.

Yeah the camera shot and chequered flag positioning made it look like Perez clinched it, I still wasn't sure where the finish line actually was until your post lol. I know F1 doesn't have close finishes very often, but making it clear where the finish line is should be a fairly fundamental thing in a race of any sort (other series, cycling, athletics, horse racing, you name it, they all seem to manage it...)

I also find it weird that most tracks have an offset, dunno why they still keep it

Agree, it's a slightly anti-climactic way to live a photo-finish. Obviously you always glance at the official timing banner, but it should either validate what you just saw, or give you the result when it's not discernible visually. Not invalidate the clear visual impression (Perez first) like here. I expected much less than half a tenth actually, just now I get it thanks to the pictures above. On the start line they're probably in the sub-0.010s gap

Edit: just to add that my nitpicking above should not tarnish how amazing this was either way  I mean give F1 fans the finish of the decade and let them find ways to complain about it :beard:

Apparantly there was another track invasion when cars were still on track after the checkered flag?
Heard this on the race podcast.

Finish line must be right in front of race control, if I remember correctly.

I read that Hulkenberg parked his car in turn 2 immediately after crossing the finish line, and the crowd could touch a car that was still hot from racing, and charged. Which was extremely dangerous.

I can't find the video now, but I saw one of spectators fighting security guards and climbing a fence using a sort of viewing platform that was on the outside of T1.

I couldn't find any car parking on the circuit tru F1TV onboards, nor did I see any spectator on track.
