one thing we must also consider is that the car is tailour made for Lewis, pretty much like Honda does for Marquez in MotoGP, anyone who seats there to drive might have a rough time until they get a grip on it

Don't worry, it's mercedes. They will pick the most boring option for sure.

You can't say he is an exciting driver. Everything he does on track SHOWS (I know they all work for it, but nobody will notice) like he is doing his laps and at the end of the race finishes at some random place where the car brought him.

I don't know how this simple hierarchy is even discussed when it comes to finding a competitive replacement: active F1 race driver > active F1 test driver > non-active F1 test driver

Obviously when comparing drivers of good ability... we're not talking an active JL Deletraz vs a retired Schumacher

Exactly. Max Verstappen jumping from a Toro Rosso into a Red Bull worked - he won the race. Paul di Resta jumping from the sidelines into a Williams didn't - he qualified last. That's the difference we're talking. The longer a driver's on the sidelines, driving other less demanding cars, the harder it is to jump straight back in at short notice. It took Hulkenberg more than a weekend to get up to speed and he had only been out of the cockpit a few months more than everyone else. These cars are incredibly physical, a lot more so than they were 10-15 years ago when F1 had a lot more testing and more opportunities for other drivers to drive in practice sessions

Whether Vandoorne is more or less talented than Russell is a moot point. He's been out of F1 cars for 2 full years - he's not going to be prepared for this. He will be significantly off the pace. Russell's been racing F1 cars all season which puts him in a much stronger position

With Bahrain's strict rules for incoming travelers, I'm not sure if the Vandoorne option might work logistically with such little time. Isn't he currently testing FE in Spain?

IRC the plan was always to fly him in, even before Lewis tested positive.

Oh it's been deleted now

BBC saying George is the lead contender, though. Just depends on Williams releasing him

From this site, who has internal source at Mercedes, Russel will replace Hamilton.

They also said from that source, on a podcast, that Hamilton will renovate with Mercedes for 3 years, but with the option to stop and retire at the end of each year, just giving a heads up so they can find a replacement.

Translation:

Quote:
Mercedes Dude: Sorry the wait, it's been hell today.
"Me": No problem Dude, I'm happy that you could still answer me today!
Dude: But we have to be quick.
Me: How's the man?
Dude: It's ok all things considered. His body is ground, he said. Seems like he was beaten up by 5 guys.
Me: Wow Dude, he doesn't deserve to get beaten-up.... Just kidding, let's hope he can recover soon!
Dude: Don't even tell me about it, but he's very strong. Altough... never mind!
Me: What do you mean? Is he pretty bad?
Dude: No, not at all. It's because we already have seen very strong young people, athletes included, succumb. But this won't happen to him, by God's will.
Me: Don't even think about it!!!
Dude: Of course, but we are all worried here, and it's not just with him. Everybody on the team are subjected to be with the disease.
Me: Tests?
Dude: We all did it again today. We will se the results tomorrow. Meanwhile we are all as isolated as possible...
Me: Where are you?
Dude: I'm in a little room close from the box with 2 teammates. None of us has any symptoms, but we are using masks and the room has been totally disinfected by our team. We are working well, we're used already to work like this since the beginning of this shit in march...
Me: Do you think he can make it to Abu Dhabi?
Dude: Honestly I don't know, but if I had to bet I would say that he won't go. The family will come (maybe they're already on their way) and I think that they will take him as soon as he can get out of here. Besides, there's all the bureaucracy so he can travel before 14 days free from the virus. I don't think so...
Me: And the question that won't rest?
Dude: Who will replace him?
Me: Yeah!
Dude: George.
Me: Really??
Dude: Sure, I wouldn't play games now right?
Me: It's all settled already?
Dude: Wolf said that Williams want something in exchange.
Me: And?
Dude: Wolf made it seems like there was a little problem, that he had to talk with Daimler Chrysler, but he doesn't see a lot of trouble in the way, so I would say that is 99% right.
Me: I'll publish!!!
Dude: Go ahead, obviously, like always right?
Me: Of course, Dude who said to me!
Dude: That's right. It wasn't published anywhere yet?
Me: Not that I've seen and I'm looking for all the time.
Dude: Then fire the canon soon! If it blows, put the blame on me.
Me: I'll publish even this!
Dude: Sure, I just hope that it doesn't blow.
Me: Thanks buddy!
Dude: Go there!

It'd be pretty funny if Bottas is relishing his opportunity this weekend that the FIA decide his 3 wheel change pitstop was illegal and give him a back of the grid start for Bahrain 2 :whistling:

I know it's more likely they would've just given him a time penalty for Bahrain 1 by now if they were going to do anything, but stranger things have happened....

Seems like the rules permit, as long as they're from the same compound.

Bottas used white and yellow tyres at Spa in 2015, btw.

Fantastic opportunity for Russell and well deserved. Can't wait to see what he can do this weekend and hopefully in Abu Dhabi as well.
