The 2016 season saw Azerbaijan become the latest addition to the Formula 1 calendar, with capital city Baku playing host to the fastest street circuit in F1 racing, on a layout designed by renowned track architect Hermann Tilke.

“Our brief to Tilke Engineering was simple - create a circuit that is unique, one that will help the Grand Prix in Baku quickly establish itself as one of the most exciting, thrilling venues on the F1 calendar, and one that the fans and teams alike are excited about,” said Azad Rahimov, Azerbaijan's Minister of Youth and Sport.

“Most importantly, we wanted a track that would showcase the best of Baku, our capital city, and I am delighted that the circuit has achieved exactly that aim.”

Tilke's design married technical sectors with extreme straights to create a stunning circuit that also thrives on Baku's very attractive urban atmosphere and its great combination of history and 21st century style. The historic city centre, the beautiful seaside promenade and the impressive government house all combine to provide the perfect backdrop for the spectacular track.

“Obviously street circuits present a number of challenges, in terms of circuit design, but we have been able to incorporate some unique features that will provide the teams and fans with fascinating racing,” he comments.

“For example, the extremely narrow uphill section at the old town wall rewards pinpoint accuracy and courage, while the 2.2 kilometres along the promenade sees the cars running flat out at very high top speeds - an incredible spectacle for the race fans on track and the viewers at home.”

Baku is good. Lol no!

But I think we have a good chance to see how engines are doing. Ferrari powered cars showed good straight speed on China. Let's see if this means something in Baku.

Oh boy, Toro Rosso vs McLaren.....

Anway, probably a race not so crazy but not so boring as the first 2.

I like how FOM are overlaying telemetry on the Halo from the OnBoard.

Also noticed they have added a little marker to the timing graphics to show how far through a sector/lap a driver is.

Remember the last time a Red Bull driver sucked and crashed all over the place?

Yeah they devoted him. Max is lucky no one else is any good at Red Bull at the moment and Sainz is locked at Renault.

Still, they're so far up his ass they still wouldn't replace him.

Crashes are allowed in practice, that's why it is practice.

Anyway, I just saw the crash of Verstappen in FP1, and noticed it is an exact copy of his crash last year in FP2. I only noticed the difference because one crash is without halo, and one is with.

Kvyat was only there to promote the Russian Grand Prix, so they weren't probably that attached to him

But that's red bull, their short term PR hit is much more important than a driver's long term career, ask most of the Formula E and some of the DTM grid ;)

Max is making the mistakes drivers his age go through in Formula 2 or DTM, he'll come good eventually

How long are people going to continue explaining his mistakes off as youth? He's in his fourth year in F1, even Grosjean had sorted most of his crashing out by then.

so I watched FP2 and almost all times sector 2 was at yellow

too much drivers mistake or FIA trying to show that one part of the track is obliged to slow down?

Hamilton had 4 years of experience in 2011, and still was impetuous and crash-prone like you expect a 25-26yo to be to some extent. That's about the age where risk-taking behavior starts to decrease in the human brain, and where emotion starts making space for patience and reflection (generally speaking, not just for drivers). Experience helps with channeling some of it, but can't completely override it.

He was already racing near the edge for the previous seasons, now he's finally seeing what happens when you cross that line. For me, all this 2018 could be his maturing season, maybe a little more for the next year.

He wasn't ready, but they had to promote him otherwise he could have signed to another team. Anyway, Malasia was the first real intense with pressure test besides his first race with the team. On the first race you are always more cautious, then since he won that, he probably kept that mood for a loot of time. Now he's finally trying to really go fast, bad mistakes will happen. Let's hope he learns from it.

too bad the rules make this track better on practice and qualifying than on race, the course is really prone to mistakes and so

Grosjean off twice in a lap. Broke the gearbox and out of quali.

Wasn't that same corner, and just reverse car to the track and then decided to go off again?
