Hungary first hosted a Grand Prix in the 1930s, but following the Second World War and the building of the Iron Curtain it was not until the 1960s that motorsport began to find a place in the country.

At the start of the 1980s there was a general wish for a Grand Prix to be held behind the Iron Curtain and negotiations took place with the Soviet Union with a view to a race being held in Moscow. In the summer of 1983 however, the attention of the Formula One decision makers turned away from Moscow and towards Budapest in Hungary, whose national sporting authority was keen to put the country back on the map of global motorsport.

At first a street race through Budapest was suggested, but in the end the decision was taken to build a brand new circuit in a valley 19 kilometres outside Budapest.

The valley provided natural vantage points for spectators and in 1985 work began on the Hungaroring. The track opened in 1986 and it held its first Formula One event in August that year. It was a huge success and almost 200,000 fans showed up.

Although tight and twisty, the circuit has been known to throw up some great races, the most memorable being Thierry Boutsen's win in 1990, beating Ayrton Senna by 0.3 seconds, and of course the 1997 race where Damon Hill in the Arrows sensationally passed Michael Schumacher's Ferrari only to be denied the win by mechanical failure on the very last lap.

For some reason I couldn't be less interested in the weekend. Not planning to watch practice sessions or support races. Maybe it's the halo decision that killed that 10-year-old fan inside me (or/and that Hungaroring is such a mickey-mouse track that it's dreadful on dry conditions).
However, will create the polls after the race no matter what.

Hungary used to be the worst GP of the season, the last couple of year it is improving.

Or maybe we have so many terrible tracks in F1, that Hungary suddenly doesn't look that bad anymore.

They're not terrible, just the same. All Tilke tracks are designed in a certain way that they've become generic, bar a few. Old school tracks are more organic. It's sad when the Hungaroring becomes a circuit you can look forward to.

I've always liked the track and especially the grid girls. My...my...

I also got my best career finish of 2nd place in an f1 league here. :p

I find amusing they were able to fit 2 DRS zones there

Actually they should put it in a corner and the drivers should be able to activate it on the car in front of them.

This will probably be a fun race, hard to pass makes some daring overtaking maneuvers and a lot of strategies.

Yes, because this is how F1 works these days.

best part of this race will be seeing if Kubica can lap faster than Palmer in the post race test

Hungary improved a lot after 2008, with cars that were able to follow each other a bit better than before.

I'm curious to see how this new cars race here. I don't think it'll be a good race, but I'll watch anyway.

I'm predicting a spectacular race by Verstappen.
Why? Because I'm not able to watch it.

More downforce, better tyres. I'm worried that we're headed back to the old Hungarian GPs :(

No doubt, the only times this race has been fun in the dry is because there was a hell of a lot less downforce than the parades of the 90s/2000s, and the tyres were going off

Well F1 has double "fixed" that this year, so it's going to be the battle for pole that decides the win

How's that weather looking?

Good race usually after the track reconfiguration before the 2003 race. But with these hard tyres this year probably not going to be a great one.

Easy Ferrari win

(Continuing my streak haha. But still, short wheelbase vs Long Wheelbase should lead to the Ferrari having the advantage here.
Plus that whole fuel burning ban should slow mercedes down a tad)
