Severe head injury can mean anything from short coma period and minor cognitive deficits to life long battle (like Schumi) or death. Hopefully it doesn't mean the latter.

I remember that Daijiro Katoh, after his Suzuka 2003 MotoGP crash, was 15 days in coma before his death.
In the few days before he died, there were rumors claming he regained consciousness and would be better soon.
And then, you know the end of the story.

So, head injuries means so many things, "good" or really bad, that we only can wait for news.
But sadly, nobody can really think things will go better.

We have so little informations about the true nature of his injuries, no need to make plans on the outcome. The best for now is to move on and wait for further news.

I was watching the race on Sky recording, so live but delayed. I was worried some accident might happen with the increasing rain. Was a bit surprised they didn't throw safety car as soon as Sutil went off. When they showed the crane removing his car with steam rising behind it, worried marshals and debris behind it I realise (before the TV commentators) that someone else had gone off there, and from Bianchi being listed as OUT ahead of Sutil, guessed it must be him. So even with fast forwarding there was a sense of dread.

At least he's still with us for now, all we can do is pray for a decent outcome…

Won't that statement just say "he's had surgery and is moved to ICU" anyway?

Maybe more maybe not. Just found that.

They pushed the engine cover back to recover Jules from the car.

It seems to me that this accident has a nasty similarity to de Villota's one, in terms of where any injury is likely to be. I know it's far too soon to know how he has been affected, but I think we will be seeing the cockpit protection debate reopened with more impetus.

Even if the cars themselves remain fundamentally the same, I would at least expect changes to be made to vehicles that are allowed trackside.

With all the money sloshing around in F1, there is really no excuse for this not being done 15 years ago, complacancy due to risk vs reward is the only factor.

I hope Bianchi recovers enough to live a normal life, like Karl Wendlinger and his Monaco accident.
I also hope that FIA has the sense to review its car recovery procedures and add impact attenuators on the recovery tractors.

they'll probably forbid recovery vehicles to be on track if the race is not under SC, basically they will introduce the pace car as it was 20 years ago in indycar.

the bad thing is this accident was totally avoidable. You can crash at 200mph into a wall, that is a risk part of the game. But crashing into a recovery vehicles is something you can totally avoid if you recur to better procedures. And we went close to this in 2007 Nurburgring, remember liuzzi's car?

minute 5.40, 3 tractors on track and liuzzi hitting one of them
