Wasn´t Ricciardo always only expected to return at Qatar?

First they had talked about Singapore but that was always going to be too early. He'll have to be fit for Mexico as that clashes with Super Formula.

I don't imagine he'd give much of a shit about winning super formula if his F1 drive was confirmed :p

Say he's not fit... would they stop Lawson from doing Super Formula or would they have to go crawling back to de Vries?

Well according to this they also have Hauger and Maloney as reserve drivers

https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/f1-re ... /10411718/

But do they really have the points to get a superlicence?

There's also Jake Dennis, who is a RB driver.

AFAIK the bigger problem is that a team is only allowed 4 race drivers during a season. AT have used Tsunoda, de Vries, Ricciardo and Lawson.

That´s like quitting your studies because someone offered you a job. If he can become champion in a series, I´d say go for it. Get that title on your CV, you never know how fast AT will fire you again.

Lawson is a skilled driver, is not like he's gonna burn his career entirely because of one bad season in F1

thats my understanding too. If Tsunoda or Lawson cant race and Danny is still injured they need to beg De Vries to come back.

They'll claim force majeure - unforeseen circumstances meaning their driver can't take part.

Zhou isn't making a dick of himself, and is there or thereabouts on pace with Bottas I feel this year. Pourchaire will be entering his 5th F2 season (4th full time) if he does it next season..... plus if he's champion he can't do it, so maybe they'll throw him Super Formula way?

True but Pourchaire turned 20 only last month. I can see him replacing Zhou mid next season but he might be the new Grosjean. Quick but crashy.

Pourchaire is much smarter than Grosjean. He used to be very clean and in control. I don't know what's got into him this season, but it feels like some haste and pressure to get the crown rather than Grosjean levels of clumsiness.

I think they should throw him into an F1 seat ASAP. Lingering in F2 (in case he loses the title) could backfire into a lack of motivation and getting entrenched into bad habits. Super Formula would be a decent alternative as at least it's a step-up from F2 driving-wise.

I read few days ago that Ricciardo was supposed to be announced as AT driver for 2024 sometime after Suzuka (because Tsunoda was obviously center stage in Japan) but that would leave Lawson totally in the cold. Does the Singapore result somehow alter the narrative and give Lawson more races to audition? I mean it's not like AT is going anywhere with Ricciardo unless he's very good at kissing butts in the Red Bull front offices but then again with Mateschitz no longer alive the way RB execs operate might have changed?

One part of your question answered, Lawson in the car for Qatar and likely more races: https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/ricc ... /10523492/

McLaren has signed Hirakawa as a reserve. Has superlicense points, which is handy.

Dan and Yuki get the AT seats for 2024, Lawson back to reserve https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/alph ... /10523930/

Surely another team will poach Liam from RB while they're faffing about.

Either he gets poached or will be promoted to a race seat if either Tsunoda or Ricciardo don't deliver by mid-season.

Only really Williams, and they seem set to retain Logan. Which given the team doesn't need money anymore is odd. Guess it's mainly about that passport
