What's going on with qualifying?

That's a question that's certainly perplexing more than a few people here at the Circuit de Catalunya amid ever-changing reports about when - and if - the new-look elimination-style qualifying will be introduced.

The latest suggestion is that only Q1 and Q2 will feature the more regular driver eliminations under the new-look format first proposed last Tuesday, with the pole fight of Q3 remaining as it currently is with all cars out on track until the chequered flag.

Speaking to the media a short while ago, McLaren chief Eric Boullier joked that the state of play had changed ahead of every interview he had done today. However, the Frenchman understands that changes to Q1 and Q2 only were discussed during a meeting between FIA race director Charlie Whiting and team managers here yesterday.

The World Motor Sport Council meets on Friday and it is there that any change for 2016 would be rubber-stamped. Bernie Ecclestone had first suggested the system would be delayed until Europe, and then maybe shelved completely, so your guess is as good as ours in terms of what actually will happen in the end...

Its just one face palm after another. It is now bordering on club level amateur officiating.

First off don't change qualifying, but if it is going to be changed a simple way would be the top 11 in the standings get the first 15 minutes to bang in a lap time. Then the bottom 11 get 20 minutes and an extra set of tyres. Then who ever is in the top 10 proceeds as is normal.

Giving the last half of the grid an extra set of tyres (the softer option available) will more than likely ensure that the top half of the grid have to put the fast laps in the beginning. Theoretically the lower half would get the better track conditions and giving them the faster tyre would mean that they aren't massively off the pace and 1 or two might get through. The lower guys that get through get an extra set in the last part of qualifying.

It won't do much at the front (but neither would the stupid proposed format) but could shake up the middle order and kind of have the old feeling of two qualifying sessions on a Friday and Saturday, and won't feel as gimmicky as the proposed 90 second shit.

Or we could just ban telemetry during qualy and the race and let the drivers feel the status of the car, tyres and fuel levels

Heard a rumor about a Lance Stroll his Billionaire dad, his dad apparently bought the Prema F3 team he raced for last season and recruited all the best guys to work for it to help him, and now he's bought the GP2 team he is racing for and bringing in all the best engineers etc for top dollar but on top of that he's also bought a 2012 F1 car and entire test team so Lance can get F1 mileage in, it seems totally fucked up.

But doesn't Stroll actually have some talent compared to Chilton?

I commented in an American based Indycar forum about how Max Chilton (when Ganassi signed him) wasn't rated at all in F1 circles, and got absolutely shot down for it!

Graham Chilton owns / has owned both Carlin and Arena teams through his son's careers. Now in 2016 his new company is sponsoring both Max and Tom in Indycar and WTCC. So Stroll senior's approach isn't all that new.

Not new, just new heights of choosen method. Perhaps he has talent, but getting more testing and opportunities then anybody else helps a lot.

Nelson Piquet Jr also made into F1 by running all the junior formula on operations mantained by his dad. At least he did it ok, won races and championships, the problem is that his boss in F1 was Briatore

about Stroll, I only remember his name from the crashes on the infamous Monza F3 race

So Channel 4 are set to announce their line up on Tuesday next week, but apparently this is who is likely to be involved in their coverage:

Presenter: Steve Jones (always thought he's a bit of a prick, plus has very little previous connection with sport let alone F1)
Analysts: Mark Webber + Susie Wolff + probably others interchanging throughout the season
Pit lane reporters: Karun Chandhok + Lee McKenzie
Commentators: Ben Edwards + David Coulthard (who'll basically have the same role as before)

This is of course subject to confirmation next week

Lol, if the best parts are Chandhok & Coulthard, that's sad. I sympathise with Channel 4 viewers...

Now i just hope i can get any decent stream of sky...

Could be worse since legard and James Allen names were back in the ring.

Never heard of Steve Jones but meh, jake wasn't exactly mr sport before his f1 stint and he was pretty good.

So this ludicrous qualifying procedure is happening

I think the FIA is trying anything to get the Mercedes cars off the front of the grid

:slaphead: Good God.
Well, hopefully in Melbourne it's a total chaos with lots of yellows, bit of rain and everyone being utterly confused (including the stewards and the timing system), ultimately resulting in Wehrlein taking pole due to luck.
Wouldn't be surprised if it gets scrapped for good before Monaco.

I wouldn't be surprised if it gets axed even before Melbourne. Or a drivers revolt refusing to drive during qualifying. At the same time people worldwide boycot it. Only handfull of people trackside and even fewer viewers on tv.

Despite all the tweaks & changes from the past week, The WMSC voted through the original proposal where all 3 segments of qualifying will feature this elimination nonsense.
