Just thought of a good way to make qualifying more random. Don't have 3 practice sessions before qualifying. 1 short 30 minute warm up followed by normal qualifying. Then have the free practice sessions before the race. All focus on car setup can then be on the racesetup. Cars who qualified out of position can setup the car for more straigth line speed. No more stupid parc ferme rules.

Yeah great idea. So in 2.5 days of an F1 event you see 30 minutes of running. I'll totally spend a couple of hundred dollars for that.

Not sure if stupid or making a joke.

Wut? I presume that in cookie's idea there won't be any running on Friday anymore. On Saturday you'll have a warm up plus qualifying and perhaps some practice sessions afterwards. On Sunday another (couple) practice session and the race. So 30 minutes of running?

How can you get that wrong? Qualy on Friday after short practice, then the normal two practice sessions on Saturday. So still plenty of running but an interesting format

Can you read? I like the Friday of a race weekend but it will probably get dropped or be just for GP3 and GP2 in my idea.

this is how a weekend schedule could look:

Friday
GP2/GP3/porsche Supercup practice and qualifying

Saturday
09:00 - 09:30 GP3 race 1
10:00 - 10:30 F1 qualifying practice
11:00 - 12:15 GP2 race 1
13:00 - 14:00 F1 qualifying
14:30 - 15:15 GP2 race 2
16:00 - 17:00 F1 Practice 1

Sunday
08:30 - 09:00 GP3 race 2
09:30 - 10:30 F1 practice 2
11:00 - 12:00 F1 practice 3
12:30 - 13:00 Porsche Supercup
14:00 - 16:00 F1 race

The only problem with a schedule like that is that there would likely be hardly any running in the Sunday practice sessions because they wouldn't want to risk damaging the car in any way so close to the start of the race. If you suffer an engine failure late into the final session your not going to be able to change it in time for the start of the race & if a driver goes off & does enough damage they may not be able to repair it in time (As we have seen with FP3 crashes preventing drivers qualifying a few times) & while I know the sensible suggestion is to bring back spare cars I think we all know that there is very little chance of that happening.

To be honest I quite like the weekend format as it is with practice on Friday, Qualifying on Saturday & the race on Sunday. If they were going to change the format in any way I think they should just take it back to how it was in 2006 & have 2 1hr sessions on Friday rather than the 2 90 minute sessions we had since 2007. The shorter sessions always seemed more busy with less downtime as they were trying to fit there programs in.

Also Bernie now seems to be suggesting that the new qualifying format may not be introduced at all.

Qualifying should change from round to round to retain freshness and ensure some randomness to the grids. I'm thinking grids determined by pulling straws, a round of bingo, a bikini contest and perhaps who can piss the furthest. If they want to make each qualifying country specific then there could be a beer drinking contest in Germany, bull fighting in Spain and karaoke in Japan.

Come on F1, be creative.

beer drinking contest in all races for qualifying

Kimi would be pole position in all and Verstappen would start last. plus some drivers racing with hangover and more excitement

This page is so full of bullshit, it can act as qualifying for the Spanish GP.

I'm calling bullshit right here. Thanks to Bernie's "Think Before You Drive" messaging the beer drinking qualifying round will turn into a Kaliber Shandy contest, where pole will be awarded for the most gassy belch.

Honestly I'd pay to see 22 drunk drivers in qualifying.
