Nothing more on the Vettel and Button incident. Results stand

Fortunately.

They've got to hurry these decisions up. 3 hours after the race, could change the whole scope of many reports and what not.

I think the penalty as such is fair, but +10 is a bit harsh. +5 would have been enough.

It was +10 because he did the same thing in Spain

But how many times did Maldonado run into other cars and got away with a +5 only!?

Why has Webber been penalised?

Reading on Twitter he has a 20s penalty?

He ran all 4 wheels off the road whilst making a pass. On the exit of a corner. Like Vettels.

Whilst this is consistent, I still think it's bullshit.

Schumacher's penalty was that he frigging totalled a racecar and threw away a good result.

That was the penalty for such dumbassery since the dawn of racing, why do we need all this bullshit grid penalties for what are racing mishaps with no intentional harmdoing? It's becoming more and more irritating that nobody is protesting against it anymore and has become a widely accepted way of doing within the sport's fanbase and also professional community.

REALLLLLY NOW?

I guess Vettel's penalty in Germany set a precedent....

Great, another way for the FIA to penalise overtaking, well done everyone.

Technically this means Mansell would've been penalised for his pass on Senna+the backmarker in Hungary 89.

Huh? Mansell kept all four wheels on the track. How is that relevant?

If you exceed track limits, you should be penalised. There's a reason for white lines.

However, it needs consistency! Hamilton in Bahrain wasn't penalised. The FIA needs to make sure that there is no way you can gain an advantage by running off. I don't know, less grippy tarmac, astroturf, gravel, a wall. Something.

To be fair, the rule was made after Bahrain, however your point is still valid. But the FIA also made it clear that you must leave room for cars that are alongside. In Webbers case, like Vettels before, the car alongside did not leave room.

Oh, but as soon as Vettel moves close to Alonso, that one is a penalty?

If I were Red Bull I'd be feeling mighty fucked here. Because they've been on both sides of this rule and both times they've been penalised.

Pretty sure there was an access road that he had to make use of to squeeze by a backmarker and Senna in one go.

It's not massively relevant but maybe a fun thread for the winter months would be looking back on F1 overtakes throughout the years and decide which would get penalised under today's rules.

Mansell kept all four wheels inside the track, so not relevant to this discussion.

Vettel went off long before Button moved over. There was no one on track beside him so he could use all he wanted.

But does the leaving room alongside rule include coming out of the corner?

Not sure I agree with Webber's penalty.

Yes Mark had all 4 wheels beyond the white line, However he only ended up there because Kobayashi didn’t leave him room to remain within the white line.

The rules clarification from a few races ago states that when a driver behind gets his car alongside the one infront while atempting a pass he must me left room, Kobayashi failed to leave him room & this forced Mark to put all 4 wheels over the white line.

In future just hold your line and wait for the contact?

Indeed  Which will also earn you a penalty.

So the message from the stewards is...

...you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.
