When these power units were introduced, weren't the penalties intended to roll over from race to race, for example Alonso with his 35 grid penalty would have say 10 places deducted this weekend if he qualified 12th, 12 next race if he qualified 10 and so on until they were spent

I'm glad this didn't happen as it'd pretty much hand Nico the title, but it might also help the rules work as intended without all these loopholes the teams keep finding.

The point of the rule change was durability. Call it crap fr F1 or whatever, what is happening now is completely contra to what the rules intended. The penalty system was there, as said above, to prevent big spending, yet, here it is. With the penalty system of loosing minutesin a race, like Mclaren did, it seemed crappy, but now Hamilton basically gets a free pass. Brilliant. So, why not do that in a whole weekend and turn up the engines every race?

I would be perfectly ok with Mercedes being allowed unlimited engines in return for having to start at the back of the grid every race! :whistling:

The problem with these engines (and tyres) is that they aren't been driven to the max. You have drivers turning down the engine form pretty much lap 1 onwards and are basically going into conservation mode right from the start. The problem for me in that is that this is built in by design rather than having an exceptional external circumstance which makes them conserve.

Whilst I don't like these engines and feel they are wrong for F1, I actually think they would be pretty good if they were pushed hard throughout the race as we would see a return of hard balls to the wall racing, not lift and coast racing which we are getting.

But the FIA have painted themselves into a corner with the complexity and costs of these things and are too far up themselves to admit they made a mistake, trying to pass the buck back onto the engine manufacturer's who have designed engines to the FIA's spec.

Yeaa but it's all the various parts that give out the penalty.



What they changed from before was that you would start from the pitlane and yet maybe make a stop-n-go depending on how many changes you did. That's what was asked to change on the rulebook. Now you, at the most, only start at the back of the grid.
