I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't in the grid this year. A big shame if we lose them.

They'll make it. With Kolles there in pretty good hands, well he gives them a chance.

Bernie will be happy. He has said 12 teams is too many.

Bernies newest is that he would hate to see Australian GP go. It is as classic as Monaco.

Bernie turns faster than this flag :flag:

So, the latest rumour on McLaren is that their Octo Exhaust is costing them a large chunk of performance. There's a ceramic box that collects the hot gases exiting the engine and distributes it to eight seperate pipes, with the general idea being that you can then spread the exhaust gases around the back of the car.

Problem is, they wanted to use a material called Pyrosic, which is stupidly expensive (as in, £20,000 per manifold). The FIA have slapped Pyrosic on their banned materials list, and whatever material McLaren are trying at the moment is deforming badly under heat. This is seriously screwing up the rear of the car, and will need a complete re-think to solve.

So, McLaren could be screwed, and they could remain screwed for a very long time.

Interesting information. Thanks for sharing MaTT. You've got to applaud them for being inventive, but at the moment it doesn't look like it's paying off.

No probs :).

A couple of additional bits of info: Pyrosic is allowed, but only when used as a heat shield. Plus, people are not one-hundred percent sure how McLaren's system gets around the FIA rule that states a car can only have two exhaust exits. Plenty of interesting theories going around!

Found this pic that goes with Matt's story.

Good to see this kind of innovations. But clearly the "convential" cars of Ferrari and Red Bull look way faster then the experimental Mclaren.

Red Bull's is not 'conventional' per se. Assuming they adopt the design used in the last few days of testing.
