In all my time following F1 activley (since 1993) I have ever only had a couple of jump out of the seat and missed heart beat moments. Senna in 1994, Hakkinen in Adelaide 1995 and Hockenheim 1999, Kubica in Canada 2007 and Webber in Valencia 2010.

Out of those Kubica and Hakkinen 1999 were terrifying to watch live. Kubica mostly as I was certain he was dead on impact.

If you go that way I'd like to add Burti in Belgium 2001, and perhaps also Hockenheim 2001 but in Spa I thought he was dead. And also Sato/Heidfeld in Austria 2002.

Sato and Burti were more scary than Kubica (for me). Burti because you just could not see him under those tyres and the images of Irvine trying to assist the marshalls, plus Sato was just utterly motionless after what was a huge hit directly on the driver's section of the cockpit.

Kubica I was never afraid for. I can't explain why.

Yeah, those were all quite scary, and so was Kovalainen's crash at Barcelona 2007 when he suffered a rim failure.

e: Teams showing some great double standards for blaming Pirelli making racing dangerous while they completely ignore their safety advices for setting the tires the right way.

Yeah, I thought Burti was either dead or seriously injured in Spa, but it's the only time I've thought that. Kubica's, like kals, there was something about that I thought that it might break a leg, but that his life wasn't in danger.

That being said I've only ever watched 2 races in which someone has died and curiously they were back to back, maybe even the same day, so perhaps I'm not the best at judging a fatal crash.

Yeah, I'd forgotten how nasty that Sato accident was, and Burti was another big worry. I was also a little concerned for Ralf at Indy, seeing his helmet knocked upwards by the impact and the lack of movement or attention he was getting.

After a rough season in 1994, I remember holding my breath after the start crash at Estoril 1995.

I forgot about Burti...but I was the opposite. I didn't think he would be killed, dito Sato, for no reason that I could have explained. In saying that I was very anxious during those moments but didn't think I was witnessing a fatality like I did Kubica.

With Hakkinen's tyre blow out, it was so unexpected, and in the first second or two I honestly thought that he was either going to plow into the barrier and roll over, or vault it completely. His actual impact was nothing compared to the others mentioned, but for a second I thought it was going to be catastrophic.

Oh right, the Ralf's crash at 2004 Indy was pretty serious looking. And you couldn't help to make connections with heavy crash against concrete wall, blue/white Williams and a yellow helmet. I think Ralf broke his back quite badly and it was not noticed at the Methodist Hospital, only back in Germany on the same week.

Talking about Ralf...Ralph Firman's accident at Hungary was also pretty serious looking.

One accident that no-one has mentioned yet is Massa's 4 years ago. I remember seeing him in the wall and for a split second I flippantly cheered and thought "typical Massa", but then my stomach turned and I realized this wasn't as innocent as I'd thought. Hearing the engine scream and seeing little movement was very worrying. Then the rumours started that Massa had hit a foreign object, which I was surprised to see confirmed by TV replays before Massa's condition was truly known. I don't recall if I feared it was fatal or not, I just remember sitting in stunned silence hoping he was ok.

To this day I'm still amazed that 1) either Brawn was allowed back out onto the track that afternoon and 2) Brawn received zero sanctions for their improper actions that day.

I had the same feeling with both crashes. And now that I think about it, wasn't Massa's crash at the same corner as the one with Firman?

I was really worried about Massa when the red flag was out for a longer time than normal

Yes it was. I hope they added proper fencing after Firman's crash though. Never really could have a proper look :p
