Kovalainen could replace Grosjean at Lotus
By Editor on Wednesday, November 28, 2012

Heikki Kovalainen is a candidate to replace the fast but inconsistent Romain Grosjean at Lotus, the Finnish broadcaster MTV3 reports.

The highly rated Finn Kovalainen is on the market because Caterham is reportedly considering signing the pay-driver Giedo van der Garde.

However, MTV acknowledged that Frenchman Grosjean, despite Lotus’ deliberations and the 26-year-old’s numerous incidents in 2012, is “more likely” than Kovalainen to line up alongside Kimi Raikkonen next season.

But Germany’s authoritative Auto Motor und Sport said there is truth behind reports Lotus is seriously considering ousting Grosjean.

“Many suspect that Gerard Lopez will persuade Grosjean’s sponsor Total to spend more money,” read the report by correspondents Tobias Grunen and Michael Schmidt.

“But even Total has a problem with this protege. The French oil company has a safety campaign for public roads, and the face of a ‘crash driver’ doesn’t fit.”

I laughed at the last bit.

Lmao about the last bit indeed. But still: Grosjean > Kovalainen.

tbh Kovalainen had his chance. He was outperformed by Petrov despite being at Caterham for 2 more seasons than the Russian and benefiting from the newest parts.

Grosjean deserves another shot.

How was he outperformed by Petrov? Let's look at the numbers for this year, shall we:
Race results: Heikki 7 Petrov 10 (Who finished ahead)
Quali results: Heikki 12 Petrov 8.

I would say they were pretty evenly matched.

yes, but this was a new team for Petrov. He was called in late and was too big to fit in the car at first. But near the end of the season he started beating Heikki. Numbers aren't everything. And even if they were evenly matched, which I would probably agree with to an extent, no one expected it to be that way.

Apparently the Russian has two options for next year. One being Caterham, the other being ...? (maRUSSIA perhaps?)

Considering that they were drunk, I'd say they were 'going down swigging'...

Petrov actually did a pretty good in the second part of the season. As much as I like Heikki, I don't think he's good enough to deserve one of the better seats. If Grosjean could stop crashing into things, he's actually very quick. I'd be more willing to give him another season, and ditch him half way through if he's still destroying the car every race.

Now Bottas, officialy takes the seat of Bruno Senna at Williams for 2013.

Funny world where Ayrton Senna's nephew and a japanese guy leave F1 due to lack of financial support.

Bruno did have 10.000.000 dollars on his bank, but Williams decided to take a long term plan that is more based on sportsmanship. Maldonado is already bringing the cash, Bottas is the future talent of Williams. I think these two will run for Williams in 2014 also, if not another team buy Bottas or Maldonado run out of cash.

Maldonado's credit line lasts as long as Chavez remains alive.

And I don't think Hugo's got so long left.

Bottas is a good talent but I think he should have been actively racing this year rather than just relying on P1 practice. It's a shame about Bruno as he's had a better season than has been made out but he knew he was on borrowed time at Williams. Maldonado must be entering his make or break year.

Maldonado doesn't have any pressure of losing his seat, as long as Chavez is supporting him.

Maldonado did win a race in a Williams... I think he'll be safe for at least an other season.

But that win didn't really provide much value for Williams as Maldonado failed to capitalise on the result and help his team to a better final championship position. Which in turn would have provided more cash to the team.

Petrov did a pretty good job this year, all told. He's nothing hugely special but he kept Kova very honest. As for Heikki, he's like Glock - had his chance at the big time and just seems to be clinging onto the dream now. Can't really blame him as he's not exactly old or anything.

As for Bruno, my point is exactly that he doesn't have enough money to keep himself safely into the field. Otherwise, he'd be an easy name at the other available seats. I have no doubt Bottas has a way higher potential to develop than Senna.
