Villeneuve at that point was concidered as a very good racer back then, winning the Indy 500, and winning in F1, albeit with the best car on the grid. It's a pity what happened after that and that he ended his F1 career in a rather silly way.

Jacques actually had some talent, ok not top drawer talent but not as bad as people make out. Same can not be said of Pastor.

Villeneuve's career only got screwed up by his manager. He himself is IMO a good driver.

Jacques was better than Damon, frankly. Neither will make a greatest drivers list, but they aren't terrible and got a bit lucky with their titles.

You can't win the Indianapolis 500 coming from 2 laps down if you don't have talent

Also the Williams car changed engines in 1998 and he couldn't challenge the fast improving McLarens as Williams had Renault engines in 1996 and 1997.

You can't win the Indianapolis 500 unless you have a great crew behind you that helps with strategy to gain two laps back and by using well timed yellow flags.

You can't win the Indianapolis 500 when you actually cross the finish line in second place, but are promoted to the win two laps before the end because the lead car mistimed the restart.

That's talent for you.

Funny you should say that as my wife used to (probably still does) have a mega crush on him. I preferred Dannii.

I used to be a big JV fan, up until mid-way through 1997. From that point on his arrogance and delusions of grandeur began to irritate me. When he was in Indy Lights and Indycar he was amazing to watch but in F1 (and a lot in his latter years) he believed he was something more than he was.

That said I still cheer him on when he's in Nascar or some of his other stuff.

The point I was trying to make about the Indy 500 wasn't to diss Jacques or his accomplishment, it was a deserved victory. But it wasn't all Jacques... he drove impeccably to come back from those two laps lost under a penalty. But the team and some circumstance had a hand to play in it as well. The latter is the point I was trying to make.

I like Villeneuve because he wasn't just a good driver, he had a signature move.
The way he would stay tucked in before suddenly dive-bombing during braking always seemed weirdly specific to Villeneuve for me. He kept doing it in his late F1 career, often going too deep but at least trying the move.

It's like the way Alesi used to hold the wheel (hands at 10 and 2 instead of the regular 9-3 o'clock position). Little things that stand out, very few drivers have those.
