Drainage grooves have been cut across the track on the starting grid, But only for the 1st 11 grid places. Drivers have requested they be allowed to do practice starts at the end of the practice sessions.

I asked Perez about that & he said he had no idea about it. I guess it'll come up in the drivers' briefing. It's quite a substantial groove so I expect it'll be talked about.

Maybe I'm way off, but surely those grooves could affect tyre wear for drivers starting in positions 1-11? For drivers who spin up the rear wheels off the start (which will be the majority) the edges of the grooves could increase the wear rate.

I could be wrong however.

Dr Hartstien was just on 5Live saying the FIA have invested a heavy amount of resources into making sure the cars will not be launched into the air next year during crashes like we had at Spa last year...

He seemed to indicate the majority of the work has been done on the noses of the car for the 2014 regulations....
Not quite sure why they'd go for the noses when it's wheel to wheel contact that launches more than anything, but they're much cleverer men than I, so hopefully there'll be a feature or article on this in the future to explain the changes...

IMO nose to wheel contact has created much more horrible airborne crashes than wheel to wheel contact.

That's with me looking straight down, so the grooves are sort of at an angle to the grid slots.

It's better to have heavier rain on Saturday than Sunday, as they're still allowed to use wets in qualifying but in the race wet tyres would automatically mean SC.
