Sainz crash reminded me a lot of Bernard's crash in 1991 when he broke a leg, both crashes were very very similar

Bernard crashed in the esses I believe. Aguri Suzuki did the same in 1995.

Thanks, I must be thinking about a different accident. There was one featured on the BBC Grand Prix highlights show for the 1991 Japanese GP with a Larrousse (I thought) spinning into the wall exiting the esses, while Murray was doing a voice over talking about Bernard's legs being hurt.

EDIT - it was Alesi. At around the 3 min mark in this video

The crashes were almost equal, the difference is that now the cars are much safer and there's a tyre wall there

I don't know where all this speed is suddenly coming from for Mercedes. It was quite an ominous sign when Vettel couldn't even beat Hamilton's soft tyre laptime using supersofts in P1. Vettel is looking at a best result of second place tomorrow, barring a failure for Hamilton.

Mercedes have problems to get the tyres in their operating window, depending on the surface characteristics of the track. Their car is very sensitive to changes in the asphalt. Sepang was particularly bad for them, Suzuka seems to fit them better.

It's rather more simple than that I'm afraid, Mercedes are running to pre-Monza regulation change engines, everybody else is running post-Monza spec engines, I said this would happen as soon as Merc snuck in their new generation engine at Spa to circumvent the new oil burning rules, in effect F1 is an A class and B class formula at the moment with only one team running in the A class.

We know that to be the case Ian however if that was the only reason then theoretically Mercedes should have dominated prior two races, whereas in reality Ferrari were quickest at both events.
