Great explenation from the stewards. If only Mansell had known during Monaco 92 that you can cut corners to overtake if you're in fresher tyres...

Track limits debate is just so frustrating as it'll only get worse. Just stop them from having the option!

At least COTA is a cool track 8)

No there isn't if you ask from the FIA.

Seriously though, I agree with you and alex1369 about this overtaking case. It is disgraceful to see something like that happen. Alonso's move is not that, but the actions that FIA took on it and for the other similar cases in the past. Grosjean was unfairly penalized in Hungary while Fernando walks away from it. FIA should have been faster on the call today and tell Ferrari to give the position back. Alonso would still have finished on the same spot and there wouldn't be public outrage at all.

That's a terrible terrible ruling. Basically they're saying that if you know your car is faster than the one in front, then running off the track to get past is OK. Cannot understand the logic of that.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

That's a hilariously terrible justification.

I don't actually have much of a problem with Alonso's move. I don't have any problem with Grosjean's move. What I do have a problem with is that one is considered fair and the other was a penalty.

I hate to be part of the 'FIA favours Ferrari lolz' group, but amazing how both verdicts favoured them yet again.

Did I mention that the new circuits are awful? Fine, have some run off, but how about putting some grass between the track and the run off? Have some gravel? Have less run off because it's perfectly acceptable at Singapore and Valencia? *sigh*

Just worked out that even if he didn't take part in the first 10 races, Vettel would still be P3 in the championship.

Obviously there would be some points changes and it wouldn't happen like that [to appease pedants], but just to show how good he's been.

Alonso was side by side with Vergne when leaving the pits on a high speed area, having no space. While in Hungary this year, Grosjean coming from the back (and from the back DOES NOT MEAN side by side) overtook Massa by using off track. It is quite a different situation. Even Vergne thinks stewards were right http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/111117 :)

I fail to see how Grosjean was not side by side with Massa, or how Alonso wasn't behind Vergne exiting the pits...

Vergne praised Alonso for his actions and said they prevented the possibility of a big accident

"It was a racing incident and if he had not gone on the outside [of the track] like he did, we would have had a big crash," Vergne told AUTOSPORT.

"It was high-speed, and what he did was right. Actually, I am really happy he did that otherwise we would have had an accident, so yes, definitely [the stewards made the right decision]."

Even that will become quickly boring, specially when only Vettel is doing it...
It think others dont have something to celebrate...

I can't be mad at any pass that involves popping a wheelie and still being able to pull it off!

Race wasn't so bad this weekend, was happy enough anyway, just enough action to make it worth watching, didn't get the sinking feeling of dullness we've had for the past few weeks though.

Track is appalling though. Even with a mile long straight and DRS the cars weren't able to make any passes before the tyre life came into play (First 10/15 laps or so)
Awful place, plz bulldoze soon.

Did you look at the screenshots of both these incidents you're referring to before posting this? Neither support your suggestion.

I had that too. Angle of the sun meant that I couldn't tell which car was which. Ditto with the Mercs & Ferrari.
