Playing devil's advocate for a moment, there have been far worse drivers in F1 than Chilton. We talk about a "pay driver problem" but Chilton's a race winner in GP2 and did a solid job last year. He's a world away from Lavaggi, Inoue, Deletraz or even Ide - I can't see drivers like that ever racing in F1 again

He's not amongst the best 22 drivers in the world but F1 has never been about that anyway. This idea that it's a new problem and needs to be sorted out is incredibly naive. So what that Chilton's not that fast? He reminds me of Pedro Diniz, who was shit slow initially as well, but still managed to outqualify his former world champion team mate at Spa and turned into a solid, reliable driver

Playing God's advocate in this:

both of which had a few races or a season at most to prove what they could do. Thankfully they weren't retained. Shame the same can't be said about Chilton.

Pedro Diniz managed to challenge Alesi on occasions and was a worthy pay driver.

Yeah, I agree, but it took Diniz some time before he was matching Hill and Alesi. When he joined Ligier, he really struggled in qualifying - 20th and 22nd in the first two races. Even after that he only made the first 6 rows twice, at Magny-Cours and Hockenheim, both of which have obvious explanations. His big step-up came in 1997 as the Arrows improved, after he'd done 40-odd races

I don't want to see Chilton in competitive machinery but if he did end up in a decent car, it would be interesting to see how he would get on. I think he'd surprise people

Diniz had the reputation of a terrible pay driver but he was a decent talent in the junior formula. I believe he was Brazilian F3 Champion (or SudAm) and had Marlboro backing in British F3, which showed that Philip Morris saw something in him. He never won in British F3 or International F3000 but he was a regular points scorer in F3 and scored a couple of reasonable results in F3000. No mean feat when you consider how highly competitive those series were in those days and only top 6 scored.

Chilton on the other hand won in F3 a couple of times after many years in the series and with the best equipment at his disposal. He also got his arse handed to him by his team mates. One was a certain Daniel Ricciardo. In GP2, yes he won but the series that year wasn't exactly a shining example of top talent. And (as in F3) he had the best equipment at his disposal.

Yes he is no Lavaggi or Deletraz, but he's certainly no match for Diniz.

Kobayashi and Kovalainen would be an awesome driver lineup for Caterham.

An awesomely confusing pair too... not quite Brundle and Blundell level but close.

Robin Frijns has signed a new management deal with ganscomm which is a good move for him - they're targeting F1 this season.

Van der Garde to Sauber as a reserve, so Kobayashi and Ericcson at Caterham? Or maybe a surprise?
