70s vibe to the entire race tbh

Cars exploding at the start, then flips when we got the race going, cars bursting into flames and marshals doing what they want and running crazily all over the track

Plus the racing being a bit spread out and processional, could've been any race from the mid-70s lol
All they needed is some giant airboxes

Yeah I missed the announcement that this was a throwback race, but for the next one I think they should follow the NASCAR/Supercars example and just stick to historic liveries

Seriously though I'm just glad (and still amazed, tbh) that Grosjean's relatively ok. The image of the cockpit stuck inside the barrier is going to be hard to shake

I just rewatched that extended replay of Romain’s crash. He was in the fire for 25 SECONDS!

I’m still in disbelief.

I still wonder if he was knocked out for a few of those or not.

plus if that race didn't had Hamilton and Verstappen it'd be a very good one

intense fights in the midfield, a leader dropping out in the end, a recipe for a classic

That could also alto the entire season

Watching that close-up shot of him getting out of the cockpit, I think the halo saved him in that regard too. It didn’t just keep the guardrail from hitting his head, but it kinda held the rails open just enough to allow him the room he needed to squeeze out.

And Cevert accident was also mentioned in Finnish commentary.

Jesus. I have never been so shaken of an accident where driver walks away on his own power. I think it was a matter of few centimeters that he was able to get his helmet out between the halo and the guardrail. Could have been like Roger Williamson, people running around and trying to get the fire out while...I'm just glad he got out.

you know this year is something unusual when Newman escapes unscathed from a t-bone crash in the beggining and ends with Grosjean getting away from a fire blast in the end

Thanks god the cockpit wasn't upside down when Romain's car caught fire.

The halo saved his life this time but if he was upside down, the halo could have killed him.

Thankfully it didn't happen.

Yeah, honestly this was definitely one of those 'sinking feeling' accidents, from the moment they cut away from the fireball, threw an immediate red and didn't show any more footage from the area. Had this happened prior to 2018, I don't see how he could have survived.

Yeah. I hope that car is studied in detail to work out what happened, because for all that the halo unquestionably saved Grosjean's life today - even if deflecting armco barriers away from decapitating drivers wasn't the thing it was designed to do - one of the most relevant arguments against the halo was the possibility of the fire and being trapped in the car, and this was always batted away with a response of "we don't have fires any more, so it doesn't matter that getting out of the car takes longer"

This is the second incident like this in a couple of months after Ghiotto had to scramble out of his car from within tecpro barriers at Sochi. I hope this is a reminder for the sport that the risk of fire is very much still there and there's more work to be done to lower that risk further

Good point, but what can you change about its design?

I'm not an engineer but I think it needs to be looked at again - if modifying the halo is out of the question, they need to find a way to protect the fuel extractor (or whatever it's called) that broke today. I appreciate there's only so much engineers can do to limit the risk of these things and there will always be crashes outside the safety tolerances, but I think today is one in the eye for everyone who claimed fire was a thing of the past in F1

I mean we're members of TBK - we've all seen Roger Williamson's crash, and most of us have probably seen Gary Batson's. No one wants to see it played out again

Ah yes you were talking about the fuel issue. I was thinking you said the halo needed a redesign which I don't really see how it could happen.

I think they first need to look at that barrier because it shouldn't cut a car in half like that.

Why do I feel that I'm the only one who doesn't think no halo means decapitation here? Maybe Romain was saved by it, maybe he spent ten seconds extra inside the fire? Maybe it protected his head, maybe it was just few inches of blocking him ever getting out from the wreck on his own. What ever, at least it didn't kill him, right?

But yeah, good points from James B, we've got two insane accidents with fire in short period and many anti-halo people stated that drivers would take more dumb risks because of it. Maybe there's a point there?

Now we need good analysis of the fire and halo from both of those incidents so that we don't get a trapped driver in fire situation. This was too damn close.

It has a quick release function. Just like when the Mercedes GT cars had the gullwing doors.

Unfortunately you will always have the chance of a car coming to rest in a problematic position like Moreno Suprapto whatever route they take.

So good to see him joke already. Would be wonderful if he can recover by Abu Dhabi. Otherwise, it was quite a fiery exit from F1.

Imagine if it was Mansell there, they would had to bring a chopper to the track as he would roll around and faint like Ricky Bobby
