A1-Ring / Red Bull Ring has always been a meh circuit for me. It has nice scenery and some reasonable elevation change, but it is still only a bunch of hairpins and straights and nothing but a shadow of the former great circuit. But that said, I'd rather see racing there than Abu Dhabi or India.

I will probably be banned for this, but I don't mind Abu Dhabi.

Funny how some of the tracks that in the past were considered rubbish are now considered to be 'modern classics.'

Hockenheimring - long circuit
Nürburgring GP-Strecke
A1-Ring
Hungaroring

If anything, that proves that track quality is going down as we go. It's sad.

I always found the old Hockenheimring to be a great track, because it was just very interesting. Full throttle all the way, and then a 'micky mouse style track' stadium section.

Also the races itself had lots of drama, as the barriers were very close, and the long straights were kinda narrow. It was really a track that asked a lot from the engines.

The new Nürburgring, I've never been a great fan, and the same tbh for the A1 ring. Probably because I have seen a few races on the old Zeltweg track.

The Hungaroring, I like it for some reason. In my opinion, the greatest overtake ever in the history of F1 was recorded there! And sometimes we get strange results, like Hill almost clinching victory in an... Arrows!

@codename. That is more or less what I meant by modern classics.

To be fair the new Austrian GP track isn't massively dissimilar to the original. I have always really liked the new layout though. Even in bland and boring F1 seasons there seemed to be something in the races, which actually produced passing.

Old Hockenheim was just special.
I still remember Warwick having a massive shunt in the arrows during the warmup in horrible rain.

Yeah old Hockenheim was great, specially 2000 race was crazy. But i dont miss Hockenheim cuz Monza replaces her perfectly to me with the long straights... they arent 7km long but still good

Monza has never been nor ever will be anything like nor be a replacement for Hockenheim. Hockenheim was a blast through the forests, whereas Monza is fast but just full of passionate Tifosi.

Old Hockenheim was awesome, but it rarely produced great racing. Despite the long straights and braking zones it never really gave us action. But like Monaco, it was awesome because it was different.

The majority of old Hockenheim races were actually pretty boring BUT it was a different type of track, and that's why I think alot of people miss it. There was nothing like it in F1, where as apart from Sepang every new track and every new updated track is pretty much just the same rehash of one of Tilke's ideas.

Edit.

Ahh you beat me to the post Ellis, you said exactly as what I have.

Wonder what the proper Hockenheim would have been like with KERS, DRS and tyres potentially falling off the cliff.

Bernie has told Austrian media that the Red Bull Ring deal is for seven years *claps*

Also, 2014 calendar will have 20 races. Therefore it's likely that NJ isn't happening while Russia gets Korea's date.

Hockenheim always felt like you were going somewhere. Once you make the right hand first turn it was just a blast into the forrest that seemed like a scenic drive until you loop back around to town. Sad that it is no more.

I used to gladly sit through the boring races, just for the sake of the first lap's 350kph bumpy slipstream-fest. Some years, the 2-3 wide action on the first forest straight were insane

With 2012 specs, it would have been like that... just for 45 laps.

That wouldn't make sense from travelling point of view. I would rather think that Russia would get moved to Singapore slot (two weeks after Monza), Singapore two weeks after Russia, Suzuka one week after Singapore and then continuing like this year.

I compared some pole position times between 2002 and 2012, on a circuits that are unchanged. Melbourne was just under a seconf faster in 2012, Sepang and Montreal just under a second slower in 2012, Monza around 3,7 seconds slower in 2012. Hockenheim was not comparable due to rain in 2012. So I would expect times to be around 1.10 again in A1-Ring.
