I like how when they were a private team, on the verge of potential death, they won World Championships. Under Mercedes and Honda, they struggle to fight at the front.

Mercedes are pretty much in the same position performance wise as they were as Honda and BAR before that.

Exactly. The only way they'll ever win anything is if they start developing a new car in March and disregard the current season
or to get a new technical department.

I like that excuse. But then again, how deep is the problem? Are the people who work there the same? On a lower level, possibly. I don't know. On a senior level, most of the staff are completely different from the BAR days. IIRC, only Fry remains.

That was a fluke, only made possible by Ross Brawn seeing a loophole in the rules, and none of the other teams believing him until it was too late. That wasn't regular form.

I believe Honda decided early in 2008 to focus on the 2009 car.

True, and Ferrari and McLaren were too late with building their 2009 cars with KERS.

Indeed. But thankfully Honda pulled out at the end of 2008. If they had stayed on, the engine would have prevented the 2009 championship.

Talking about Honda, Dutch site www.formule1.nl reports that Honda might return to F1. They're entering the WTCC next season with a 1.6Turbo engine which could provide them with some info for an F1 engine. And thats a quite from the engineers Kazuo Sakurahara and Masahiro Matsumoto

those reports remember me of this...

Although I understand it was the death of Havery Postlewaithe that prevented the initially planned entry into F1.

every team that sees no more chance of finishing in a fantastic position starts focusing on the next year halfway through the current. And often they also suck in the next.

And McLaren and Ferrari had to fight until the end of the 2008 so they had no time to work on 2009 so they sucked in 2009. I know my history :P.
Still, giving up on the currect year and looking to the next is of all times.

That's what will be interesting with next year. The midfield teams know that this is their best chance of picking up a good result, so they will probably develop their 2012 cars heavily, which might have an impact on their 2013 machines. Remember that there's only two months between the last race and the first winter test.

It was a shame about that as by all reports that would have been a half decent car.

why would one actually give up on developing this year's car when the same regulations stand for 2013 and heavy rule changes are to be introduced for 2014?

I would expect 2013 to be an evolution of the 2012 cars.

Yep, any development on the 2012 will in some way be useful on the 2013 car, it's not like the 2009 rule changes which quite a lot different in many areas.

Based on the times, Verstappen could mingle with the top. If they where able to poach a great driver who knows where it would end.....

However, this news report is about being an engine supplier and not for a full F1 team... Maybe the return of the McLaren - Honda combo?? And please ditch the chrome and do a classic red-white sheme....

Seeing this livery for the first time in a while makes me actually realize that i miss it. Although I hated it after the first year they used it already. But the livery i miss most of all, is the BAR-Honda. The 2006 one was just orgasmic.
