Especially the rial logo on the nose. That doesn't even look remotely like rial, even if it was upside down and/or backwards.  That looks like a hellish car to drive though. Look at his shoulders.

It looks as though the stickers have peeled off and the team couldn't afford to replace them. The car itself was pretty good. It was a neat and tidy chassis which was powered by a reliable and solid Ford Cosworth (DFV I think). It's issue wasn't the driver but it's fuel tank, which was too small. 1988 was actually one of De Cesaris' best seasons in his career, but he rarely finished a race because he kept running out of fuel. When he was running, he was running well. |

I love the Rial, because that's about what you'd come up with if you were shown an engine, and told to make some sort of assembly that allows that guy over there to sit into it and race it |

you can look that even without the engine cover the car looks pretty clean aerodynamic, that design was great on 1988 cars, they should had kept that formula |

If you repaint the car scarlet, it is the 1987/8 Ferrari. And vice versa. The Rial was designed by Gustav Brunner who based the designs on his previous car, when he was employed at Maranello. |

Can someone explain me why some teams had the engine that exposed back in 1988? I know the Lola LC88 also had the engine exposed. Cooling? |

that because they could crash and spend the money they didn't had and also because most of it were tire testing so at least during that time it wasn't necessary and of course because they tested in Rio de Janeiro during summer every bit of cooling was necessary |

Damn, those are the last simple, sexy F1 cars made. It all went downhill from there. Too bad the unfortunate accidents happened that early and that brutally. I am pretty sure that with today's cockpit advancements (HANS, wheel tethers, stronger monocoques), track advancements (tyrewall covers, TecPro, SAFER, larger run-offs), and with the low downforce they had back then, it would be reasonably safe to run these again.

The cars looked great, but I thought F1 was really boring in 1992-93 apart from when Senna got the bit between his teeth. They were probably at peak aero for the time, and just seemed to follow each other around unless cars ended up out of position, in which case the field spread made defending hard. IIRC the FIA literally banned driver aids and reintroduced refuelling in an effort to make things more interesting. I do agree about racing them again though; the biggest safety problem was the complete lack of head and neck protection. Speaking of which:  Makes my neck hurt just to look at
