I imagine the harsh penalty has a lot to do with the fact Hamilton/McLaren did this in Canada 2010 too. They've broken the very rule which was created to stop teams doing what they did.

More than the last 10 have been won from the first row.

McLaren have been idiots since that balaclava became team principal, it's just that Lewis' issues last year masked it somewhat.

For the sake of McLaren, Whitmarsh has to go. He knew full well that the problem was fuel, he knew as soon as Lewis left the pit that he couldn't make it back to parc ferme, and yet he comes out with this ridiculous statement about it being a 'technical problem'. He then sends Sam Michael (possibly the dumbest acquisition in sport this side of Shevchenko to Chelsea) to argue that a human error was actually force majeure. What did he think the stewards were going to do when they heard that?

Well, I don't think Ron or any other top team principal would've said something different but if Ron was there heads would roll.

I think Ron Dennis would at least have the personal integrity to hold his hands up before the stewards and accept what would probably have been a smaller punishment.

Quote:
Monaco 2011 - Keep Lewis in the garage until late in Q3. Perez crashes, LH only 9th. Cue Sunday's mess
Canada 2011 - Bad set-up leaves Lewis only 5th
Britain 2011 - Lewis has to back off to save fuel, Jenson loses points after the wheel isn't attached properly
Germany 2011 - Jenson has a hydraulics failure causing a retirement
Japan 2011 - Sent Lewis out too late in Q3
Brazil 2011 - Gearbox failure for Lewis
Australia 2012 - Clutch problem for Lewis at the start
Malaysia 2012 - Slow pit stop for Lewis loses him time
China 2012 - Gearbox problem for Lewis drops him 5 places on the grid
Bahrain 2012 - Several pit problems for Lewis costs him several positions
Spain 2012 - Lack of fuel excludes Lewis from qualifying.

Just sayin'.

Well this grid is looking to make a fantastic race. I have no idea when the last time there was no McLaren, Red Bull or Merc starting in the top 5, long long time ago. First race at Barcelona that I'm actually quite excited about watching, even Lewis from the back will be interesting (Too bad he doesn't have many fresh sets of tires.)

I still think this race will be utterly boring.

So, I hope I will be proven wrong by tomorrow!

Not such a long time: Hulkenberg in Sao Paulo 2010 was the last Williams pole.

And actually Maldonado did not set the pole position time, so will he officially been considered as the pole position man??

I'm assuming so, seeing as Hamilton's been excluded from the results altogether.

Official F1 website has Maldonado in 2nd behind Lewis, with the 1 replaced by DSQ.

Maybe they're just slow.

Afaik, the official statistical pole goes for who starts on pole and not necessarily the one who makes the fastest time.

Also, in this specific case, one can claim Lewis made the best time with a car outside the rules, which is technically unfair, rather than changing a gearbox and losing some spots.

The website my (Spanish) girlfriend recommended when we were planning to go to the beach the other week, not actually sure how reliable it is, but does that really matter when making predictions about GP weather? http://www.tiempo.com/barcelona.htm
