STR's performances throughout 2015 suggest otherwise...

Errr, with a Mercedes engine that Red Bull could be back among the Ferrari's and Williams.

Not a hope in hell.

I'm not saying the RBR is a bad chassis, but it's far from one of their best.

It would still be better than now, that's all I'm saying.

See that's not necessarily true. Yes they'd have more torque and power but that wouldn't mean significantly better on-track performance. 2015 is not a Newey chassis remember. And even then, not all reliability issues are down to Renault. RBR do like to package things tightly to improve performance which is at the cost of reliability.

I agree, but it's no coincidence they're better at Silverstone than they were in Montreal and in Austria.

The chassis might not be as good as the previous seasons, but it's still really good.

The customer engine is underpowered.

I cannot see Red Bull opting for a customer engine in that sense of the word (technically, they're a Renault customer as well but with benefits).

Its either a a stop gap because Renault bails F1 or at least ditches RB and a new manufacturer (VAG) or RB has overplayed their hand and it's their only choice.

You've been saying this for a while, and since RBR are way ahead of the other Renault teams in both drivers and constructors championships I'm not sure where you're getting this idea... Sure there's the odd impressive run by STR but on average they're way behind RBR and if anything are making the Renault engine look even worse.

The performance gap between RBR and STR in 2015 has closed down compared to 2014 and before. The RBR isn't as good as previous whereas the STR is a better car. In 2015 we've seen STR outqualify and challenge RBR in the races, something we've rarely seen since 2008. Yes points are what count and RBR have more than STR but RBR have far less than in 2014 or before and STR have a couple of rookies.

If both Red Bull and STR had Merc engines they would be closer to the front than they both are. They are both having to run compromised set ups due to power and reliability deficiencies.

The difference in the two is Red Bull are probably having to run a more compromised set up than STR due to what you said above Kals that Red Bull run a more aggressive packaging. I think they went super aggressive with their packaging in the belief that Renault would make a step with their engine alongside their chassis development. The fact that Renault have regressed has thrown a spanner in the works.

STR as you said have produced a handy car this year, but is it better than Red Bull? I don't think so, but its not a second rate chassis, that's for sure.

I agree that Red Bull probably wouldn't be up there with Merc, but I think they would have at least had a couple of podiums by now though.

They'll both stay. Why replace either one of them? It's the car they need to work on, Vandoorne and Magnussen are better off somewhere else and I hope McLaren will put some effort in that process.

A dismal year like this helps a 'rookie' learn and built character. Button is simply doing his job. He is already a WC and will only get more frustrated. Yes, he is still good enough, but why have a young drivers programme if you're not gonna reap the talents it produces?

Mclaren hasn't learned anything from Kovalainen/Perez/Magnussen. They can't/won't use a young driver in a development project. It's their loss in the end. Magnussen and Vandoorne are unlikely to race next year, unless with Haas. Alonso and Button will likely retire by the end of their contracts and then McLaren will not have Vandoorne or Magnussen.

It's a sad side effect of the current state of F1. Talents are discarded too fast and experience is king.

With their young driver program I don't understand why they haven't tied up with another team to put at least 1 driver there each year. It seems only red bull is giving their hound drivers a somewhat decent shot at f1 with str

Post subject:  Re: 2015 Random F1 Discussion Thread

The problem with that is there aren't enough seats to place junior drivers in... i.e... Alonso starting at Minardi. Until F1 can sort out a way to get a few more cars on the grid there will forever be a bottleneck of drivers attempting to get into F1, whether they are a team affiliated junior driver or not. And even then, who will fund McLaren's junior drivers being at another team? Right now McLaren will be focusing on investing time and resources on solving their own inhouse challenges.
