Lotus (then Renault) started consulting the FIA in January 2011, a year later it is is declared illegal. Well done FIA for capping costs and providing consistent application of the rules. Here's where I give a slow sarcastic clap.

Is there a link to a FIA or Lotus statement that it was legal? Never trust news sites completely.

And even if the FIA declared it legal at first, they can/must of course always declare it illegal if someone can prove that it is illegal afterall.

Thats one of the few moments we can see a change in F1's status quo, when someone has a brilliant idea and manages to get half a second ahead, then FIA fucks with it even before the start of competition....If we have another season with 100% dominance from Red Bull, blame the FIA. :yuk:

We had all ingredients to start an awesome season, looks like we're already starting it in a maculated way...

The FIA has banned similar devices that control the movement of a car's chassis over the years. But the governing body initially felt the device in question was a part of the suspension and did not contravene that area of the rules.

But insiders say that, once it became clear its main role was to improve aerodynamics, banning it was a "no-brainer".

Article 3.15 of the F1 technical regulations requires that any aerodynamic effect created by the suspension should be incidental to its primary function.

It further states that any device that influences the car's aerodynamics "must remain immobile in relation to the spring part of the car".

An FIA insider said Lotus and Ferrari seemed unconcerned at the decision to ban the device.

That is the rule they introduced to ban the mass damper that Renault used.

If the system is used to get the front end lower to the ground then a team could argue it isn't aerodynamic, but about lowering the CoG. But they'd probably lose that fight.

The Lotus system levels the car under breaking. That is influencing the ride hight of the car which is clearly an aerodynamic instrument.

Besides that it is also against Articles 10.2.2 und 10.2.3 of the sporting regulations. There it says that it is not allowed to install systems which change suspension settings of a moving car. Leveling a car under breaking obviously requires a stiffer front of the car. If that is what Lotus system does, it is illegal.

In my view the FIA ruined Renaults development process 2012 by not knowing its own technical regulations.

And guess what, that's a woman's garage! :D

She is a famous Viper owner and bought the Honda without its engine in 2010, if I remember correctly. She also has some more Vipers and other cars. Would be cool to sneak into her garage one time.

If Honda had a Viper engine, championship locked up with races to spare.

Did HRT say anything about when their second driver will be announced? Which drivers are still in the running for that seat?
Liuzzi probably, VDGarde with his money, Ambrosio too I read and Clos because he's Spanish. Were other drivers mentioned too for that second seat?

Jacky Eeckelaert said a week or so ago that it was d'Ambrosio, Senna & Van der Garde in the running.

It looks very unlikely that Liuzzi will be retained. Giedo looks a dead cert.

However, HRT are looking dodgy regarding simply making it to Oz...

Thanks :), I really hope it will be Giedo, curious how he'll do it in F1 if he gets the seat!

I heard Kevin Ceccon linked with the HRT seat recently as well. Seems unlikely though.

He'll be lucky if he even gets off the last row in QLF.
