FIA say Zhou and Albon(?) are conscious and being evaluated at the medical centre. I didn't see what happened to Albon.
Albon took quite a while to leave the car actually.

Amongst all this, I noticed that Sainz and Verstappen had almost identical reaction times 0-100. So my previous "he's fucked the start" comment was perhaps slightly hyperbolic.

Called it, and for once I'm not happy to be right. 8O

The way he landed was pretty similar to Diniz in 99. Looks like they aren't strong enough in all directions.

Well it has to disappate the energy like any other crash structure on the car, no doubt it would've been a hell of a lot worse without it but yeah, it shouldn't be doing that

No the roll bar is not part of the chassis construction to disparate energy or a crush structure, it has one job, stay in one piece and stop the drivers head from sliding along the road.

Getting Estoril 95 vibes from that scene.

Karun showing that George looked in his left mirror before turning left, interesting.

I think F1 dodged a bullet there, simply for the fact there wasn't going to be much more to keep that car from getting past the fence.

If the whole runoff was gravel he would not have cleared that Tyre barrier. The asphalt did nothing to slow him down, the gravel did unfortunately it was not big enough

And most tracks actually have similar run-off areas. So if you slide upside down, nothing will slow you down until you either flip or hit the barrier. If it had been full gravel traps, I think the car would have stopped before the wall.

Amazing work by Alpine, Ocon's car has been repaired

Pretty good of George to get out of his car and then immediately sprint to Zhou and see what he can do. I just noticed he's actually standing on the tyres above Zhou's car.

Not a lot of drivers would have the presence of mind in that situation.

If the photo of the protestors is legitimate, I really hope that all of them have been taken away from the circuit before it restarts.

And in that Twitter video posted the fence collapses awfully easily.

Inb4 ban gravel traps

A larger gravel trap would've rolled him before and dissipated the energy before the wall

Nah, gravel and rolling cars aren't that predictable. A larger gravel trap could have just as easily pitched him higher into the air.

All tarmac and he'd have stayed on his lid and ground to a halt

All gravel and the flips would've been earlier and safer

The half tarmac/half gravel runoff seems to be the worst of all worlds, either tarmac is the safest solution or still needs gravel to effectively slow the cars down, which suggests its not so great after all...

Make your mind up FIA

I've seen another photo of them being rounded up by the police on the Hangar Straight, but I suppose it's now a race between checking all the gates are locked and seeing if the fence needs repairing.

Lucky the race was red flagged for the shunt though, since there was protestors sitting on the track further around.

thankful for the red flag so we didn't have a cancelled race due to dead protesters

That's a near-800kg car plus all the fuel. I don't think it did too bad!

If these are ecologist protesters, I think their cause is just and that they have the right to protest F1.

Doing it by running around on a live track, is idiotic
