When was the last time we had a championship where the clear 2 fastest cars have been teammates, and have been really close to each other? I mean with a clear gap to the next best runner? Webber never really got to Vettel, Massa never got close to Raikkonen in 2007, Fisi never got close to Alonso, Barrichello never got close to Schumacher. Only scenario I can think of is Williams 1997.

Was going to say Prost and Hill at Williams, on those days when Senna couldn't get the McLaren to work, but Prost did effectively have number 1 status in the team. Maybe you could argue Hill and Villeneuve, but Damon was comfortably quicker earlier on, with the gap narrowing as the season went on. But for silly mistakes and terrible starts, Damon would have wrapped up the title a lot earlier than he did

So I guess if you want something like this that lasted the whole season, it would have to be Prost and Senna at McLaren

Would have been wrapped up at Monza had it not been for that stack of tyres.

Then again, Villenueve suffered damage because of them as well.

How about Hamilton and Alonso in 2007? Except for the fact they both screwed each other out of the championship and gave it to Raikkonen in a vastly inferior car.

This, more specifically in 1988. 1996 was the closest after 1988 but obviously there was a lot of driver errors along the way plus Schumi challenged a good few times in his Ferrari.

Giancarlo Minardi says BMW might return (not sure how serious we should take him).

that would be good.

still can't really see the point of Mercedes entering/investing so much just at a stage that all big manufactures were fleeing.

This makes literally no sense.

With a reduced number of manufacturers in the sport Mercedes face less competition, which means less risk to their investment in F1.

Because casual fans - of which there are more than hardcore fans - see Mercedes romping to victories. Good PR etc etc.

But to the casual fan they're beating Renault and Ferrari. Most casual fans cannot afford a Ferrari but a decent percentage can choose between Renault and Mercedes.

If Honda, BMW and maybe finally a VAG brand joins and Mercedes keep beating them it's even better PR.

I dunno about vastly inferior. Ferrari did win more races than McLaren that year, and none of them were gifted. Combine the two McLaren drivers' scores and they'd have only just beaten Ferrari. Added to that, I think history has been kinder to the two McLaren drivers than the two Ferrari drivers, in the overall ability sense. I'd have said the cars were pretty even - the (long) Ferrari better around the faster circuits, the McLaren better at the slower circuits

yesterday sbt aired a special programme with the reporter that used to cover F1 back in early 90's telling his stories with Senna and then it all came to the part of the fatal crash where he says that FOM only have the crash footage that we all know, and that Bernie Ecclestone claims that senna onboard was shut down before the crash, and the reporter was almost saying at the end that was a farce, because there was footage, but they didn't showed at the time because of reasons we all know

I believe this all came out during the manslaughter trial - the onboard footage goes blank a second or so before he hits the wall, as does the data from the car, and nobody seems to know why. Naturally, conspiracy theories have filled the gaps in all kinds of ways.

I still believe the footage was deleted, if there wasn't any damage to the camera (which is quite unlikely) and is better leave this way because he's not going back

Some interesting comments from Mario Andretti - reckons Alonso could leave Ferrari at the end of the year if the situation doesn't improve

McLaren Honda, Button might retire, but dunno if he could lead the team with another young talent like Magnussen

Ferrari and Red Bull should swap Alonso/Vettel. Alonso might get some quick results in the last years of his careers, and Vettel might become a Ferrari legend.
